That would be the first thing I'd look at; hot running vehicle but a cool-to-touch radiator would instantly tell ya thermostat.

At least warm. Had it on full heat when I was driving to try to cool the truck down

I'd still pull the thermostat; could be getting stuck and hopefully that's it.

You made no mention of low coolant or white smoke.

You also didn't make any mention of an oil milkshake.

I agree, it seams like the coolant is not circulating the heater should be blowing really hot.

I mean I think it's probably good to suspect and replace that temp sensor given the code you got on this trip earlier, and hope running it pegged at 240 didn't blow a head gasket or warp anything

Hope that'd be it too...again had forgotten he got a code and didn't even know what one he got. Thought he said it was for something else though?

Sensor ain't expensive, and it's easy to replace too. But yeah a faulty sensor would absolutely give an inaccurate temp reading.

    20201021_184857.jpg

Question for him though is...were the temps high on both the OBD reader as well as the dash temp gauge?

If high on the OBD reader, but normal on the dash, then the ECT sensor could be at fault.

If high on both, vehicle definitely overheated and I'd check the thermostat first.

No milkshake either, oil is still solid. I’ll give the thermostat a check after the trip thank you
I’ll give heater another try tomorrow morning after he’s cooled down.
I’ll definitely replace the sensor when I get back. Might give the radiator a flush for the hell of it too
High on both. Both climes about the same on the truck gauge and the obd scanner. I was watching the obd slowly clime after I drove off. Took about 10 15 mins let’s say before I hit 240 and pulled off the highway

Code was PO115 for coolant temp sensor
And a pending 171 for bank 1 running lean

    Correlation vs causation

High temps would cause both the gauge and OBD reading to rise; being in CA and having that code I'd just buy a sensor and replace it since you're gonna smog it for a sale anyway

You'll want a small towel or several rags for that banjo bolt at the fuel rail cause you'll need to pull it off to get to the sensor

Can't remember if it's a 17mm deep socket, or something similar to that size

I don’t even think that fuel rail can fit a socket without removing a bunch of shit. I seem to remember torquing it to spec with a crowfoot when I did injectors last on a 5VZ. Or I’m thinking about the rear banjos.

Scroll up to the pic I posted.

It's a bolt in front of that fuel rail section that you unbolt to allow access to the ECT sensor.

ECT sensor sits in front on top of the engine (it's the one that's unplugged).
