Revisiting this wheated version of Woodford after a long bottle vacay.

It has this light fruit note that I couldn’t quite place…read a couple reviews and found references to peach and pear flavors. Yeah it actually is something like that, definitely a hint of pear. Unique stuff, nothing else tastes like it. A pleasant summer pour.

Howdy all. Wanted to take an afternoon of this crappy Colorado weather to throw out one of my fun recipe's. I call it Big Mellow Corn beef. Locate a half full bottle of Mellow Corn, and recall the stupidity that took place when the bottle was full...if you can. Next, go find the biggest cheapest hunk of beef you can find (London Broil). You normally would use a better grade of beef, but the post Mellow Corn paternity test (from your cousin Judith) was kinda pricey. Now, let's get down to bid-ness.

    1. Marinate chunk -o- beef in a 1/4 cup of Mellow Corn, a tablespoon of crushed juniper berries, or coriander, black pepper, and a tablespoon of brown sugar, let sit for a "spell" at room temp
    2. Silence phone. Calls from irate family members, and some local clergy about the "incident" could be distracting
    3. Get a cast iron skillet (or whatever frying pan you have left over from the divorce agreement), get it smoking hot, put in some vegetable oil, and butter
    4. Remove meat from marinade, and dust with a light amount of flour. Toss it into pan and sear it angrily for about 30 seconds on each side, or until brown (not burnt)
    5. Get old the slow cooker you got for $2.00 at the local thrift shop (clean old spiders out), and fill the bottom with a whole chopped onion, and a chopped large green pepper
    6. Put in a half can of Rotelle tomatoes and chilis, and then a handful of whole kalamata olives (if you don't like olives, then to hell with you, don't put them in....deviant)
    7. Chop up 3 cloves of garlic, toss em on in, then cover all the vegetables with 1tbsp of black pepper, 1tbsp salt, 2 bay leaves, 1tbsp wine vinegar, and 1 cup of Mellow Corn!
    8. Toss the angry beef slab on top of the vegetables. Put one chopped up jalapeno on top of the beef, and add the other half can of Rotelle on top
    9. If you like taters, add about a dozen or so red skin taters on top....yes, you have to wash them....hey, did you take a shower this week? Maybe wash yourself too!
    10. Put the slow cooker on low, and let it simmer for 4-6 hours depending on the size of the beef slab
    11. When it's done, strain all the juices into a sauce pan, salt/pepper to taste, add in some corn starch and water (mixed before hand), and thicken it up
    12. Go through the mental rolodex of people (dates) that you haven't managed to piss off during your Mellow Corn "antics", and see if you can lure them over to your trailer for dinner
    13. Once you are done, save the leftover's,l it's the only food you'll have this week
    14. If you don't want to clean up, just take the dirty pans and slow cooker down to the thrift shop, and donate for a tax break of $750....household goods

How do you like that Single Track? I've never seen it before. Been really dissapointed by some local "craft" offerings as of late. If it delivers, I'll track some down

I really like it. Very herbaceous and sweet, with just the right amount of proof to keep it lively. I picked it up in Jackson last fall on a recommendation from the store owner. I like it better than the 4 year willet I almost grabbed in its place.

Cracked this one open tonight. A bit more kick the the 125 proof of my last bottle lol. Still, for the price per pour, amazing. I still “hunt” other hard to find stuff, but there are so many great bottles easily found. Cheers.

For the $60 SRP I will take this all day long over other overpriced bourbons and whiskeys! You know the ones I'm talking about.

If I had to pick the best value for dollar in bourbon, it'd be WT Rare Breed.

But this stuff is neck and turkey neck with it, and depending on my mood that day it's a toss up really.

Love a good whiskey. I'm an Old Forester guy.
I was drinking on a bottle of OF 1897 Bottled in Bond and it reminded me of something I couldn't put my finger on. It was a place in time, a faded memory. I mentioned to my Aunt and she said that my Grandfather's bourbon was always Old Forester. Maybe that's why I like it, maybe I'm genetically preprogrammed, who knows.

Normally I'm a straight tequila on the rocks drinker but when I go brown it's usually for Old Forester, Woodford, Buffalo Trace. If I venture out of that range I like to stick with a KSBW - Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

this used to be my pick no matter what the day or occasion. then they had to go ruin it.

in 2021 they changed the taste a bit & i dont like the new version at all. (im told that they changed it in 2014, 2017 & 2021... but my whiskey mouth only noticed the 2021 change)

semi good news: they say they are gonna put the original Rare Breed back out in circulation because of all the complaints... but of course its gonna be limited run, boosted price vs the current Rare Breed.

    just sayin......

    Yes, really enjoy that one.

Bernheim out of heaven hill is a much better version of this imo. If you liked the woodford, you got to try this one.

Rare Breed is batched blend. Each batch is a little different.

There's no "original re-release" coming. If you noticed a flavor change that's just regular batch to batch variation.

The rest of that is misinformation from who knows where.

I have one unopened bottle of this and also a barrel proof version. Looking forward to the opportunity to give them a try once some open bottles get finished off.

I'm always interested in seeing what people started out with, I had two:

    [IMG] [IMG]

Turkey...because our older brothers friend would buy it for us....and only Turkey. Calvert Extra when I was old enough to afford it ($10 a bottle), because my girlfriend didn't like Turkey. My how times have changed.

you know I swore off wild Turkey for years, for my friend's birthday in my late teens I was beyond hung over off a few bottles of the turkey, and then all of us had to work the next morning! Now even with more expensive bottles. there is always a bottle of it along with a bottle of Tin Cup and four roses.

are you sure about this? it was in a video interview with Bruce Russell on Youtube. (cant find it now though)

as to batch to batch/bottle to bottle taste difference? thats not when i noticed it. used to go thru a bottle every week. it was when they changed proofs & bottles that i first noticed a difference.

then when i went on the wagon(in 2020) & came back to it(in 2022) it was way different. its so different that i went back to 101.

unfortunately, back on the wagon again & have to trust all you guys with viable livers. :)

    keep sippin!

I'd be willing to see said video and stand corrected, but I'm a pretty big Turkey fan and the only changes I'm aware of vis a vis Rare Breed are batch to batch variances because it's a blend.
