Usually, people upgrade their "started" bike, to something more substantial / made for their riding. That Cayon is nice, but maybe just another small stepping stone to bike #3.
Well, that's assuming you and your son will want more than just general XC riding.

I did similar. I went from a 600$ msrp hardtail to a entry level full sus trail bike that had just enough travel for the riding where I was at. I could’ve gone for a more expensive bike/larger bike but learning and then pushing yourself to out ride that first “real” mountain bike is what made me a better rider.

Yes that has been the approach we want to take, out ride/grow and then move up.

Maybe by next year we are ready for our first full suspension bikes. :)

We have been riding every weekend so far.

Could cause all sorts of problems if they're not compatible. Might make more sense to upgrade to a better compatible shock and get that dailed in, or getting a different frame.

Daughter is in town for the week, so we wife and I were able to get a ride in with her! Also the first time the truck has had three bikes stacked in! Had a great time pedaling around…and dragging my daughter up the mountain for the final downhill :)

That’s the approach I ended up taking. I’m going to try out a DVO Topaz in the rear and sell the Fox Float X.

also, for those wondering, you can use a flask funnel to get sealant into a presta stem! I installed an insert into my rear wheel which then required sealant be injected. No injector so I had to get creative!

What's the problem with the Float X again?

I want tunability and support. I have the low end Float, no LSC. The Float is fine, I’m chasing minor inconveniences at this point.

Here's a recent review of the new Topaz 3, check it out. Might contain some useful information for your case.
Espacially the last part, comparing it to the RS SDU.

Yeah, I've read through that one, along with as many others on YouTube University that I could find. I went back and forth quite a bit. I finally went with DVO because it seems very use friendly. I don't doubt that I can get there with Fox or Rockshox, but the DVO gives you a lot of tool-less adjustability. In the end, there's always going to be a compromise somewhere, hopefully the DVO gives me enough things to play with to make it a good, all around shock setup.

Gravel bike related question. I dropped a chain twice yesterday off the chainring which has never happened when it wasn't my fault (wolf tooth oval 1x with sram GX/NX eagle drivetrain). I checked the chain after the ride and according to the tool it still has plenty of life (I use wax so swap between 2 different chains). I've heard that if you pinch the chain on the chainring and can pull it off a bit that means it is worn, is that true?

I'm thinking the chainring is done after almost 1200 miles, does that sound right? If I replace it do I need to replace anything else, cassette, chain, etc.?

I've never heard of the chain pinch method. The chainring could be worn, especially if its coming off on smooth trails. If its an NX derailleur, id check the clutch on it as well.

The FloatX is a great shock. I think those ppl saying they didn't notice much is due to either light compression tune or internet engineering. The shocks are identical to a non-oem internally otherwise. You could just send it in and have them revalve it and add the low speed knub , prob cost like $140. Personally I'd go Ohlins TTX if I was looking to upgrade.

Picked up an IXS Trigger full face last night off Jenson USA. Found some neat lines the last 2 days that I wanted to ride, but wanted a little more protection that my normal riding lid could offer.

I thought about getting an enduro convertible lid, but I like my POC Kortal for normal riding. Just want something more for the times I get a stupid idea. It's pretty lightweight like a Fox Proframe so it isn't a big burly DH full face like the one I sold. The irony isn't lost on me though, I was laughing at myself last night about it.

Anyone have any experience with the 1up roof rack?

Love the hitch mount rack but can't use it when I am pulling the camper and looking for a way to transport the bike. Taco is gone so bed isn't an option.

Roof racks in general look to be a bit awkward.

I've seen them around. never used them. basically they're just the tray so it should be great. I know someone who has it on his audi. Works awesome for their use case.
