Well doesn’t look good. Scaring on the gear get and on the pump stator shaft and the torque converter has scarring on the end as well. Looking for some advice here. Since it’s out should I just take to a trans shop to diagnose? @jjsinaz

it’s not easy finding competent trans shops.
pumps can fail but I’ve rarely seen it.

wouldn’t it be cheaper to find a whole trans, even used, and slap it in?

No, it’s a 4cyl trans and 4x4 one is few and far between, they are pricey. Already looked. That one only supposedly had 60ish k on it.

What drives the pump gear? Been a long time since I have done trans work and I'm sure a lot has changed but usually the converter has tabs that drive the pump gear.

I don’t think those parts are covered as part of a standard rebuild, probably best to have it evaluated by someone with some experience.

OK I get it. Can you take the pictures to a friendly trans shop? Yeah it has issues but it's not catastrophic. Back in the day we used to save good parts from other wise junk trans maybe the still do.

The pump looks fine to me. I can see what appears to be a small amount of scarring on the edges of the converter hub. Something looks weird to me on the stator support shaft right below the splines, but that may just be a reflection. What about the flex plate?

Yea there's a couple of good ones around be i think. I really wanted to take it to a Toyota special trans shop. There's an AAMCO right down road. Not sure how good they are though. My location has good reviews though.

Based on what I can see from your pics, I don't see anything that would concern me and the fluid looks fine too

Theres Marring on the end like something was scraping it (metal on metal) Same on the end of the converter that can be seen in the pic. I haven't checked the plate yet. Spent all day Sat. getting it out and some of yesterday so i was pooped lol. Just called it a weekend and went to cut grass. I pull the Flex plate probably tonight.

Typically when something fails in the torque converter, you'll have metal shavings in the pan. You said you didn't find anything in the pan when you had it off.

Maybe it fell out when i drained the fluid? I still have the oil bin so i can take a magnet and search in there.

Just a suggestion, before you get too deep into the trans, check the flex plate. Based on what you said you were doing whenever the noise started (4 wheeling on steep incline), I'm still betting on something wrong with the FP.

Good point, Ill lay it out on a flat surface and see if its bent at all. It sounded like it was coming directly from that area and the crank shaft was hard to turn on one side. Ill keep yall updated but its good to know that you don't see anything too terribly wrong. I was getting worried it might be a total loss on this. Replacements are like 2k. What really sucked was i had a 2wd trans that's basically the same thing just with a different output shaft that originally came out of my truck that swaps over part for part. I sold it though. Should have kept for parts no in hindsight.

The place where I circled doesn't look right to me. Or is that just some sort of reflection?

The lines in the pump gears are normal but the rough edges are not. Broken flex plates usually are noisy they are fairly thin but cracks are very obvious. Basically the scaring should not have had any real effect on the overall operation of the transmission. The picture of the stator shaft is deceiving but it does deserve a good look over.

Ok @jjsinaz i may have misunderstood what I was looking at the first time in pan. Somehow missed the glaring magnets lol. Just crapes the pan. Looks like a lot of metal shavings to me. Was under truck in not best lighting first time…. Flywheel not bent. Tested in straight table. Pan has never been dropped before
