I just opened the overflow again and more fluid came out. Just going to wait to see how it is once it stops draining through there.

    Strat from the beginning.

    1. Engine oil is at correct level.
    2. Follow the temp check procedure in the links above exactly. Fluid has to be warm and truck running to check it.

this quantity that quantity doesn’t matter.
    Redo both properly then re-evaluate.

The "quart and a half" sounds like the 1.3L that the chart posted earlier would have us expect after a plug and/or pan removal.

What a pain that there is no transmission dipstick.

Have it levelled out now and draining the fluid. Just dripping now. I put in 5 quarts of oil after draining but it does seem a little high. Feel like I should plug the transmission now and drain a little bit of oil out and see how it goes.

So initially, I drained the transmission thinking I drained the oil, changed the oil filter ADDED 5 quarts of oil, went for a drive, maybe like 2k’s.That’s when I noticed it wasn’t running right. Took it back home, drained oil completely, put in another 5 quarts, and then added 4.25 of transmission fluid. Took it out for another drive, and then about 2km’s in the forward stopped working so I had to drive in reverse back home. Now I have drained the atf through the overflow, will drain some more oil out, and then try to test drive again.

Oil spec is 5.5qt, not 5.
You can post here all day about what you tried for breakfast.
Or you can look up the procedure and simply follow it like you're supposed to.

If it says drain under 40deg, then you do exactly that. To the T. You follow the instructions. If not, you will not get the desired result.
When hot, ATF is still sucked up held captive in the trans. There is a reason why it says to do that.
You don't just pull back in, hot, and loosen the plug. It is not cold. It typically takes a minimum of hours to cool.
Or, if you want to make up your own way that doesn't work, keep wasting expensive fluid.

Remember when I said, “You’ll be cussing Toyota”?

    Well, I wasn’t kidding.

    You’re finding that out now.
Except, you are not finding it out the correct way.
There is more to it than draining the overflow.
You got a lot more cussing to do……..

If it's hot, that's it. Your workday is probably over. You wait and try again tomorrow.
Either you put a big fan underneath aimed up at the trans which still takes hours to cool it,
or you forget about it, leave it parked, then try again tomorrow when it's cold.

Everything about an AT trans service is sensitive to temp, time, and procedure order.
    Not manual. Manual is simple.
Even vehicles that rarely have an AT dipstick (MB W210 E320 with ZF 722.6) still require the above

Damn, it’s hot for sure. Does the temp show where the promoter usually is? I can’t seem to find it in the video and I’m two seconds.

If the trans temp is below 97’F or above 115’F, you will not get a correct reading.
It’s a bullshit process……….It not that complicated. But they made it complicated.

Nope, the A/T Temp light will come on indicating it’s at the correct temperature to check it.
That’s when you have to hurry up, crawl under the truck and check the fluid. All that before it gets too hot….

Try again tomorrow, I would try to check level while the truck was shut off. But I believe I have the right steps in my head now. Level truck, fill transmission, start truck and wait for right temp, then open overflow and drain until no more runs out, then it should be good. I’ll have to pick some atf up tomorrow and do things properly. Good night fellas. Thanks again much appreciated.

Not until it stops. Until it’s at a slow trickle.
I’m of the opinion, a little too much is better than not enough.
And I didn’t make up the “slow trickle” part. It’s in the manual.

    Good morning,

So, I feel like I have done all the steps right, but whenever I put it into at temp check mode it never goes on. I wonder if it had anything to do with our weather up in Nunavut. It’s only 3 degrees Celsius. I keep waiting, once for up to over 30 mins but the light won’t go on. I put it into neutral, drive, n, d, n, d, n, and the light will go on for 2 seconds, and then wait but it never goes on.

I’m thinking to let it cool, run for 10-14 mins and try draining through the overflow till trickle and see how that works.
