Would definitely beat walking around. Keep in mind I did drive it, twice, at least a km both times, both times with low atf. That is what is making me believe maybe I ruined the transmission. I mean I could try to take the pan off. I have asked our fb community if anyone may have a scanner I could use to help with the diagnosis. Maybe I’ll wait to see first if anyone has a scanner before I take the pan off. High temp gasket lube wil work fine?

If you “want” to go with an OE equivalent
Here is an OE chart, and the Permatex cross over equivalent chart.
I haven’t been to a town that didn’t sell Peratex.

However, you are in an odd situation.
You may have to use what you have on hand.
As gearcruncher said, any will work.
Take his word for it, he does this stuff for a living. (Really, he does. He builds transmission everyday)

I wonder if it would be that the torque converter is just empty? I spoke to a friend of mine and he said it sounds like that it may have just run empty.

This means you are questioning the way you filled the transmission.
Can you verify it's filled correctly.
    Check it again for verification

This is a 2009 Toyota Tacoma, I followed a 2014 manual somebody shared with me to refill the transmission. After driving and running out. Twice. First refill was unsuccessful as I had refilled it with engine off.

    So last, I parked it.

    levelled it.

filled and drained through overflow plug.

    added two to 3 quarts

started engine, waited till at temp light went on.

opened the overfill hole and let it drain till trickle.

At this point I am feeling like I finally got the level right.

go into drive and it still won’t go.

    haven’t touched it since.

Now the second time I was driving I drove it about a km until she couldn’t go forward anymore so I drove back home in reverse.

when I mentioned this to my buddy he said sounds like the torque converter may have just run dry and that I may be able to fill it up through a line near the starter, but I haven’t tried that yet.

if that may be the case I may try that, if that is even possible, but if not, I want to take the pan off, check for debris/clean valve if need to, and piece it back together. See if that will work too.

Start the truck , then go pull the overflow bolt with the truck running . Even if its cold , you should see a little fluid come out .
If no fluid coming out with the truck running in park , add some more .
The difference between checking the fluid when its cold compared to when its warmed up is fractions of an inch .
Overfilled is not a big deal . New transmission fluid has re-agents in the fluid to assist with a transmission that may be a little overfilled
Underfilled is a very big deal . There are no re-agents in new transmission fluid to assist with an underfilled transmission .
With the above mentioned .....make sure its topped up .
When you top up the transmission , you are filling both the torque converter as well as the transmission pan at the same time
The engine must be running . The engine spins the transmission pump . The transmission pump charges the torque converter and hydraulic circuits with transmission fluid
The transmission uses very high pressure in reverse and low pressure in forward . This may explain why the truck goes into reverse very well but has trouble moving forward .
For the benefit of the doubt , check the fluid level one more time with the engine running .
The only time you put the overflow bolt back in is before you shut the truck off .

Filled and drained through overflow plug ?
You do not fill the transmission at the overflow plug .
You fill the transmission at the fill plug
I beleive a 15/16 wrench is used to get the fill plug off the side of the transmission

Okay, I just tried the first step, start engine, open overfill plug when cold, and no fluids came out. So I am just going to try to add some in and retry this step.

Quick question, does the engine need to be running when topping up with it cold?

does the fluid expand the warmer it gets?

Yes sir . Engine must be running cold or hot when checking the fluid level to be sure some fluid is dribbling out the overflow
You are correct about the fluid expanding as the temperature of the fluid warms up .

Got it topped up with it cold. Perhaps ready for a second go with the A/T temp sensor engaged.

at this point when the a/t temp light goes on I just open the overflow plug, and wait for it to trickle then plug.

    then it should be ready?

I had to add about another quart before I got any fluid coming out.

I have been taking the fill bolt on and off every time I fill, is this necessary? Feels like I’ve done it like a hundred times now

When you start the truck , remove the overflow bolt
Put the overflow bolt back in before you shut the truck off .
I wouldnt worry about getting the fluid level perfect at this point .
What happens when you select forward now ?

I am not sure I have not tried yet. So I shouldn’t try to check the level at the right temp? Just try and see what happens right now?

Yes. For now, we need to get close.
Do as stated above. Engine running. Remove overflow plug. See if fluid comes out. If not, add more fluid. Repeat until fluid comes out.

    Key points.
    1. Engine running
    2. Overflow plug back in before turning truck off.
    3. Fill from Fill plug

Still won’t go forward in drive. Am going to level again and check to see if fluid will come out again.
