I don't see the overtighting "technique". They are talking about the same hypothetical bs that aluminum housing bros pedal.

I switched to metal for more durability and piece of mind.

    Anything can be overtightened.
Yes, it can be overtightened. There are many instances where people put the O-ring in the wrong spot and try to continue retighten because of the leak

Imo, if using the right tool, it's not necessary to have a metal one. These composite ones are plenty tough enough.

Aluminum and iron hum, not going to be fun when they seize up.

...^^^... I did it on my last 3 Tacomas and loved the stronger aluminum housing ... and the special filter wrench too.

I have no plans on going to an alloy filter housing. I did buy a spare poly housing…..for $45.

I have heard of people dropping them, and then they later developing a crack. I did not want to get into the situation of having a cracked one without a replacement. Cracking wouldn’t happen with an alloy housing

I plan on getting a spare one as well....just in case.

You don't happen to have the part # for it?

What's the reason? If it's extra time and money you have, pick up a case of Leinie's and come on over! I'll provide the pretzels!

I went with the aluminum one but it was because the dealership service dept overtightened the stock one and I broke it trying to get it off.

The plastic thermal cycles and tightens up, it's not that it's torqued too much. Happens when I do DIY too.

If you are capable of EF-ing up a plastic housing, you should really be able to EF up a metal one.

Yeah, I've had a somewhat overtightened housing unit...went with a Long Breaker Bar to ease into loosening it.

I'm keeping the plastic one as a back up. I see the Part# for the black one is posted too!

im commenting on this dumb old thread just to point out how funny the dude saying "you can't over tighten it because if you go past the torque spec it will break" is

A solution for a problem that doesn't exist; this is some "all metal construction" truck bed nonsense that demonizes plastic or composite beds. Install O-rings correctly and apply proper torque and you don't have an issue with the stock housing. In the unlikely event that the plastic one seizes, I'd much rather remove it than an aluminum one.

What do Toyota engineers know though....
