Prob a good chance he was a scout, but a lot of people will carry spare CV's when they go off road.

Also to add, Learning how the CV is put together now helps.. I didn't know the diff side is just kinda floating in the housing and is kept in by the length. The bearing cage on the wheel side is what broke. This allowed me to just pull the boot off the diff and remove the busted bearing cage. Didnt really have to pull the truck apart after realizing this.. You will have more work to swap the CV.

Yes correct 2 different ways to do it. With how that floats and you have the ring to hold it in the diff it can either be easy or a nightmare. Lucky it was the outer and you could just replace that. I believe its SDHQ that has new boots that just strap around the torn one aswell. Making a very easy field repair.

So they make a kit to rebuild the bearing side?? I had the spare to do some boot swaps to a high angle boot from CVJ. Also haven't cleaned up the cv to look at it that closely either to see IF it came apart. I'd like to rebuild than replace?? Thoughts?

Yeah they make rebuild kits for them. But I would hate to rebuild one on a trail and possibly get dirt and whatever in there. The boot sleeve would be a better way to go IF its only a torn boot. Otherwise I would opt for pulling the whole cv instead of rebuilding on a trail.

Ahh I see, yeah a slip over boot would be great if was just a tear.. Ill look into rebuild kit vs buying another complete.

    Nicely done!

Yes, as an apprentice mechanic I've done enough cv joint replacements in my time to know those circlips can be a pita even on a lift in a shop let alone on a trail! Good on ya for being prepared for your own mishaps but also for willing to help others.

When I moved over from England I had to sell my rolling toolboxes but I shipped loads of my hand tools over on British Airways in a plastic toolbox wrapped in duct tape, I was that guy :) I've been state side for over 12 years now but have never settled long enough to buy a new rolling box, I still use the crappy plastic toolbox with duct tape, one of these days I'm going to have a organized garage with tools in a proper box.

Honestly I tried a rebuild for the 4runner and it was more headache and a mess than it was worth. And damn well could have been me doing it wrong but only lasted a few months and the boots were slipping off. Probable cause I got grease everywhere and didnt get it sealed properly. The Napa cv's I run now and for the 120 bucks I think each I would just do that again. The rebuild kit was only like 30 ish bucks if I remember correctly.

I'm running the same Napa ones, and have to say just paying for a complete and not dealing with the greasy mess is worth the $ to me. Ruined a good pair of shorts and dirty all my trail rags..

And the possibility of getting all that grease into the interior of the truck. My garage was a mess with grease when I did mine. I am still finding it in certain areas.

Anybody going to the Beartooth / Trivium concert at the Marquee on Friday? I'll be there with my bride and our kiddo. 28th wedding anniversary on the 10th. Should be a fun weekend...

Any good places you'd recommend for a couple drinks and a bite beforehand near the venue? I see 100 mile brewing not far from there, but last I heard they were having some issues keeping up with orders for drinks and food.... But that was a while back. TIA for suggestions.

Stuff that costs more than my wife thinks.
Culinary Dropout is pretty decent, albeit a bit overpriced because of the hipster atmosphere that they work hard to put off.
Social Hall is more my style, simply bar atmosphere, a little less douchey depending on the time of day.
Then there's the Yard/Porch for more of a fun time (yard games and the like), but I'll be honest, this is the opposite of my scene, as there's only so many drunk college kids I can handle at once these days, but if you go when it's slower, it's a good time. Just figured I'd throw it out depending on what you're looking for.

    Also happy Anniversary!

Looks nice compared to the dent bent one located on mine! That is a gamble of fitment and shipping damage.. Even one from a junk yard is hard to come by these days.
