Hey all. Went to back out of the garage this morning and experienced the following: started, took off the parking brake, shifted to reverse, gave it a little gas and I didn’t move. Let off the gas, double checked I was in R and that the parking brake was all the way down, gave it some more gas and I heard a loud pop/crack/clunk and I started moving backwards. The brakes might seem just a little more squishy than normal, but I’m not sure. Everything else seemed fine on the way to work.

Do I have transmission problems in a Tacoma with only 14k miles? What’s the best way to diagnose? TIA.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Sounds like the brakes stuck for a moment and then broke free. It's not winter though which is usually when that happens. Did the truck get parked after a heavy rain and sit for a bit?

I experienced something like that in my college days with a ford probe. Back brakes were sticking.

We’ll that’s the one thing I forgot to mention, I did take it through the car wash about 8 blocks before parking it. I’ve never experienced that before.

Are you fairly sure that’s the cause? I’d certainly sleep better tonight.

Rear shoes were stuck to the drums. Don't engage the parking brake overnight if conditions are wet. You can actually bend the backing plate in severe cases, which cost 4 figures to fix as the wheel bearings must be pressed out to replace the backing plates.

You can experiment with non-OEM brake shoes (from Bosch, Raybestos, etc.) to find something less susceptible to freezing.

My 4Runner (with parking brake shoes in the rotor hat) does the same. Piece of shit Toyota parking brake design.

Relax brother. Just a mild case of self induced iron oxide friction release.

Never happened in the good ole days of asbestos brake linings, but mechanics live longer so that is a good thing.

I camp/wheel with a group that is mostly 3rd gens and if we ever do water crossings, the next day there are always a few rigs with stuck rear brakes. Super normal as you already discovered!

Same with me, car washed last month, set the parking brake 5 minutes later, and found the rear brakes stuck. Rocked back and forth and it hasn't happened since.
