It's interesting how so many people are writing off the new Taco for so many reasons but no one has even driven it yet.

10 more years and my '08 won't need inspection anymore and can run some classic plates. I'll still get a 4th gen.

Anyone else happy that the 3rd gen threads are less of a junk thread now?

I'm actually pretty happy about it. For years been kind of underwhelmed by it.

I personally listen to Toyota engineers over some youtube fucktard. Toyota has been using turbos for many - many years, I think they know how to build a reliable turbo engine.

Have there been issues with the new Tundra hybrid system or not? People shouldn’t have reasonable concerns about a similar system on the new Tacoma? Why? I hope Toyota hits it out of the park with the new Tacoma but one doesn’t need a Time Machine to have valid concerns about something new that will almost certainly increase cost of ownership long term. Some people can’t just put the blinders on and wishful think their way through life.

There's no data on a Toyota turbo hybrid 4cyl. I am giving Toyota the benefit of the doubt as they are smarter than both of us with their engine design and engineering and they have proven longevity with these systems separately. We all know you have valid concerns but that doesn't mean we all should.

Agreed. I never said everyone should have the same concerns. For all I know some in here are just EV enthusiasts who only keep their vehicles a couple of years. They could be trust fund babies with no concept of wasting money or getting great value when buying an expensive item. And there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

That said I would wager to guess that the majority of Toyota owners over the last 30-40 years buy Toyotas mainly with an eye on long term reliability and cost of ownership. I am talking to them.

As far as no data I would have to disagree. There is plenty of data on the average length of time a turbo or battery pack last when compared to a Toyota motor. For those keeping a Toyota a long time cost of ownership could be negatively effected by now having a turbo and battery pack to replace.

Doesn’t mean getting more horsepower power and torque are not worth the extra cost. Just discussing all possible scenarios in a discussion forum.

Average length of time a turbo and battery pack lasts separately is your gauge. Expect costs for any device or tech in a vehicle. This combination in a Tacoma there is NO data on. None. I'd buy this over any American vehicle with the same exact setup.

There is a reason why I picked Toyota over American brands for 30 years straight. Based on experience I do actually have faith in Toyota making a great setup. The only nerves I have are because their hand was forced going hybrid/turbo on the Tacoma. It wasn’t their normal organic game plan that has worked so well for many many years.

Yes. I will come to grips soon enough. However try to put yourself in my shoes. 30 years straight of insane reliability and low cost of ownership. I have the dealerships do all the work on my trucks. Now if I buy a new Gen Pro for instance I will probably want to keep it a very long time. Now I have to consider if I want to pay thousands to replace the turbo at some point and thousands to replace the battery pack. Do I just go for the turbo only Off Road to help with overall long term cost? Or is the power/torque increase of the Pro worth the added cost I will have to pay. These are not always easy choices for someone like me with my Toyota experience.

You do what you want. I'm 35 years Toyota ownership and trust whatever they make and know the cost of new tech. If the turbo goes after warranty I'll fix it, if the battery goes after warranty i'll replace it. I"m not scared to make the jump.

Spec'd to heavy duty commercial duty sounds good, but does that really translate into anything meaningful? I don't have an issue with the concept of turbos. I'm on my 3rd turbo charged vehicle now haven't kept any of them long term, no other reason than I switched vehicles early. I've driven plenty of turbo diesel trucks Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Freightliner, International, Isuzu. Couldn't tell you who made the engines. All of those trucks I rather have the turbo, than not have it. I don't think the addition of turbos does anything to add longevity or ease repair to any engine, and would rather not have a turbo. I do chose turbo over cylinder deactivation, but couldn't give a reason why.
