3rd Gen, need to drain gas tank

I need to get the gas out of my 3rd gen tank as it must have some water in it. Can I do the trick with the fuel pump relays and fuse or will that ruin some thing? How do I do that properly? If I can, where can I find the schematic for the leads? Thanks in advance

 

What year and engine is your truck?

 

2021. Weird it will let me drive 27 miles an hour in any sports gear or in regular D, but it will not go above 27. It must be an electronic sensor thing. Im going to let it idle for a long while with the heat on full blast and try to burn some gas. After disconnecting and reconnecting the battery to clean the terminals it ran fine for 19 miles. Also odd, usually a full tank says about 260 miles to empty now it said 385.

 

I also put a can of in a half of Heet in the tank

 

Any codes? Sounds like it's in Reduced Engine Power or Limp Mode, I doubt it's bad fuel.
If you have the V6 engine there is no way to run the fuel pump without a scan tool.

 

I can go rent a code reader at an auto parts store. What’s also odd is I ran two or three full tanks and this older gas without any problems. never heard of limp mode. i’m letting it idle and park for a while to burn some gas off with the heat on full blast. Will that ruin anything?

How old are we talking and how was it stored?

When certain problems happen the PCM will enter Fail Safe (Limp) mode, this usually severely limits engine power.

Without knowing what's really going on I couldn't tell you but if your trying to run some old shitty gas through it I would stop right now and get it drained.

 

about a year old but I did have some Sta-Bil in it. Yes there is a check engine light. I was told the only way to do that is to drop the tank, or remove the bed, (aside from the above comment )is that correct? In other words, the fuel tank doesn’t have a drain plug.

 

Build a small fire under the tank to dry it out

 

Pretty much unless you can find someone with a scan tool that can command the fuel pump on.
You can't really pull fuel out through the in tank pump with another pump like that post is suggesting, it would take forever.
There is no drain plug.

 

Thanks for your help. Last question; what kind of scan tool also commands engine systems on or off? I only know the ones that read codes, and I doubt the John at the auto parts store would know what I’m talking about.

 

That would be a bi-directional scan tool, your typically gona be in the $300-$500 range for a decent one.

Another problem is I don't know if full fuel pump control is allowed or if it's only allowed to be turned on for a few seconds at a time, I haven't poked around on 3rd gens much with a scan tool so I really can't tell you.

 

I wouldn't reccomend trying, plastic fuel tanks are made up of multiple layers. If you drill though it you compromise the integrity of the fuel tank and fuel tanks aren't cheap.
It's not super difficult to drop a fuel tank, if your not confident in doing it yourself have a shop drop it and clean it.

 

What about a siphon or pump through the filler neck?

 

Most tanks have a mechanism in the filler port to prevent that, to prevent fuel theft and also it closes in the event of a rollover to prevent fuel leakage.

 

is it better for the truck to remove the bed or drop the tank? If so what are we talking 1000 bucks?

 

Not sure about 3rd gens but 2nd gen double cabs you have to drop the tank because the pump is under the cab.

Shows 2.6 hrs to remove and clean fuel tank so multiply that by whatever the labor rate is there for an estimated cost.
Hopefully nothing in the fuel system was damaged and fresh gas will fix it, lesson learned for next time. Don't put old gas in a vehicle, our ethanol blend gas today has a very short shelf life.

 

So I thought I had a faulty fuel pump (turned out to be very hard to diagnose RFID key issue) and ended up changing my pump.
My wife and I replaced the pump by taking the bed off. It's heavy. Way heavier than my Ranger bed. My wife is amazing.
Get yourself some 2x4's to use as slides, and take off the bumper. Be careful not to break/crack any parts of the filler neck. I didn't drop the tank because the hardware was rusty and I didn't have a jack to support the full tank. I have some pictures somewhere..

 

If the Op has a double cab I'm pretty sure the pump is under the cab, I know on 2nd gen double cabs it is.
If it isn't then it may be easier to pull the bed instead of drop the tank.
