Here's the related vehicle. No longer December like I hoped would through, but now Q1 2024. I was told about a January 2024 SOP date last month by my insider, but I dismissed it and turned out to be wrong. He's right I guess again, oh well.

Looks awesome, wild to see Lexus make an SUV that fully embraces its off-road capability like this. I wonder if there will be any price overlap on the base GX and the top trim Tacomas.

You’re probably right but who knows. I’m anxious to see the prices on the GX 550. Probably in the stratosphere like the last Land Cruisers.

Makes you wonder about 4Runner, it's a fan favorite. But OT and regular GX cover the most popular 4R trims Off Road, and Limited. Does Toyota need a 4R Pro? Sequioa Pro is all new for 23' and how many $80k OR spec SUV does one manufacture need. There wouldn't be any SR5 variant unless you go Sequioa, and that's still pricey, Highlander, Rav4, and Corolla Cross. There's also going to be Tacoma Limited with with all time 4wd, which offers more than 4R SR5 minus interior space.

Toyota offers many solutions to some looking to buy a 4R, if Toyota were to discontinue 4R with the 5th gen. Unless you are looking for a 2dr BOF 4wd SUV that is priced lower than a Lexus GX 550.

I hope the 2025 4Runner looks close to the 2024 GX Overtrail. The GX will probably be in the 75K range which is about 15-20K more than I could stomach. If the new 4Runner gets the V6 twin turbo I might be in over the 2025 Tacoma.

I'm guessing the GX starting price will jump to 69K possibly 70-75K. Its currently at $59 and the LX starts at 92K that slots right in between the two.

You just answered your own question as to why the 4 runner has a place in the lineup...

Looks cool and all but the typical driver of this vehicle will be a late-30s suburban gal who pulls her ponytail through her white baseball cap on her way to the local tennis club and spa (before she bangs the plumber and the kids come home, of course). No issues at all with people who got money; may as well spend it.

I think the GX 550 has my name written on it... we'll see.

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder powers every Tacoma. However, the engine comes in myriad forms and pairs with either an eight-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual. Rear- and four-wheel drive are both available. The base 228-hp turbo four is only found in the entry-level SR, and the rest of the lineup gets mightier iForce variations with up to 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The iForce Max (automatic only) rules the roost with 326 horses and 465 pound-feet. It's a hybrid setup featuring an electric motor between the engine and transmission and a small nickel-metal hydride battery. While all Tacomas feature a body-on-frame construction, there are two different rear suspensions. The SR, SR5 extended cab, and the TRD PreRunner are buoyed by old-school leaf springs, whereas the rest have coil springs that provide a better ride. Since the Tacoma makes its bread playing in the dirt, the off-road-focused models have the hardware to go almost everywhere. The Trailhunter and TRD Pro, specifically, are fortified with underbody protection, knobby 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires, and some exclusive suspension components. The latter include a standard disconnecting front anti-roll bar and unique 2.5-inch dampers with remote reservoirs.

Definitely similar design ques in the next gen 4Runner I'd bet. But you'd buy this? It's turbo replacement expense would be more than the Tacoma and not as reliable or last as long. Hmmm

I like the GX outside of a price that’ll likely be at unobtainium levels, and just a whiff of frontier design on the front end, but it definitely has me optimistic about the next 4R. Just graft a Gen4 Tacoma mug on a GX body and call it a day.

Tundra/Sequoia/Taco/global LC are now rolling TNGA-F, and the 4R, Prado, Hilux & (rumored) US LC still yet to arrive. Toyota cloning experts are seriously working overtime at the lab. I wonder does either Pontiac or Oldsmobile still need a body on frame truck?

You get TNGA-F. And you get a TNGA-F…

I am digging it, see a bit of 70 series in that roof line and windshield. Definitely has a Land Cruiser vibe to it.

That square-ish styling is popular at Toyota
