I call BS. impossible you had zero problems or zero repairs on a 1997 Toyota.

 

Some people exclude maintenance in these statements … like:
Brakes
Tires
Fluid changes
Etc even though they can be classified as repairs

 

Maybe it doesn't have AC.
cv boots?
I guarantee it's leaking oil somewhere.

Yep. No u-joints, carrier bearings, radiator/water pumps, steering racks, bushings, hub failures, AC repair, ball joints, weather stripping, blown out shocks, etc? No way. I love my first gen, and I consider it insanely reliable, but it has many, many problems, even if those problems have seldom actually stranded me anywhere (cracked radiator is the only one, and I still drove it 40 miles to a shop)

 

agree with @forana

‘97 should have at least had the timing belt and water pump done. Unless it sat in a garage and not driven most of its life. Even then a lot of the rubber would have dry rotted.

my ‘99 was “ok” up until 250K, but even before that had a couple timing belts, clutch, unjoints, 3rd member rebuilt, driveshaft, axle bearings/seals, CVs, steering rack, starter rebuilds, suspension re-done twice at that point.

 

Thats awesome. I had to just look it up; I got mine exactly 5 years ago. Bring it everywhere. Use it for coffee in the am, refills at Wawa/QC/hotels, etc. and beer/booze at night.

It's true i bought it brand new in 97 it's a manual. Only regular maintenance has been done nothing has failed even the AC still works and it's never been recharged.

I do keep it in a garage.

 

yeah this guys in lala land. I see f-150s on the side of the road more than any other truck and yes there is a lot of them out there because people think they are buying US based company. My old man had one it never had a chance against his old toyota 22re.

How many miles on that ‘97?

Have a ‘99 with a V6, have a looong list of repairs to keep it going. It is currently getting a new engine. Have practically rebuilt the whole thing. No repairs on your ‘97??? I have heard taller tales.

I am middle-aged man, think I am over trying to keep things going forever. Definitely not getting any younger. Plan on offing my 3rd Gen at 100K miles, that or my wife gets it.

Was hot for a F150 with the 5.0 V8, just got back from doing 180 mile trip in one towing a 6X12 v-nose. And people complain about revving the snot out of the 3Gs V6…was a little surprised how much the owner had to ring its neck to get it down the interstate, and it was a light load. He was talking about getting a new Tundra. Turbos aren’t such a bad thing me thinks.

 

Shiiiiiiit….in 10-15 years it might be illegal for us to own and drive vehicles. Will have to purchase “subscriptions” for a self driving EV to run our fat asses around.

 

It won’t be a hot business because there’s not much of a way to make a 25 year old vehicle daily-driver reliable for most people. Mine is what I consider very reliable at 24 years old, but it still has constant problems.

 

Toyota's are undoubtedly a reliable make. It's not indestructible...or is it?

Oh yeah, they’re very reliable. But pretending it doesn’t take constant maintenance to keep even the finest 25 year old vehicle running is silly. People who buy $5000 beaters don’t generally maintain them. They’re disposable purchases made out of necessity, and that check engine light ain’t going away

 

well I’m shocked. My 97 4Runner ran pretty solid but needed some work. Starter and rotors always warped.
When I sold it in 07 it had oil leaks on the top and bottom of motor and had torn cb boots.
Although, other than that, there wasn’t much more major issues.

 

I will file this in the must be true because I googled it folder.

 

Recalls were issues for those effected by the waste-gate issue. Some never got the recall done, thus some lingering stories still.
