What does sr5 stand for ? Always wondered this. I’ve always gravitated to the sr5 trim as it seems like the best bang for your buck and seems to have a lot of Toyota heritage behind the iconic sr5 name.

“Sport Rally 5-Speed” was the original meaning. I’m not sure any of this applies anymore, but that’s what was meant a long time ago.

Do they still put that sticker on the current Maxima?

I had a 91 SE and at the time, compared to the Accords and Camrys out there it was a bit more fun to drive than your average FWD family car.

I guess back in the 80s SR5 was top notch.

Nowadays it means it's not a TRD. Toyita could just have an SR and an SR with an option package that includes the features that an SR5 gives you.

I'd like to see manufactures just offer the components they have a available and let you spec a vehicle to order. Wouldn't really work with Toyota, there's no practical reason you can't start with a SR utility pkg, opt for the v6 4x4 and the rear locker, cover the manual SR seats in black fabric from the trail edition and the black headliner from the OR. Paint the front bumper, throw on the black flares black LED head/fog lights and black tail lamps from the Pro. Fox shocks from the Pro, add the bronze wheels ang grille from the TE and paint it what ever color I want that Toyota has available that year. Build the thing, ship it to the dealer closest to you. Then drive it off the lot for $40k.

they did about 5 years ago. i believe the maxima still runs an extremely complex multi-link IRS that changes the tire pitch angle in turns.. but it's still more of a highway cruiser anymore than a large sportscar.

Every Tacoma starts life as an SR5. It either gets content taken away or added as trim groupings. Then added packages.

SR is so embarrassing that they don’t even put the model on the truck.

There's no reason Toyota can't build the truck I described.

" the SR5 (Sport Runabout 5-Speed), was colloquially used as a model name for the truck, even though the option package was also used on other Toyota models, like the 1972 to 1979 Corolla." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Hilux

I wonder which one came first "Rally" or "Runabout". I suspect it was "Runabout" because,
    1. It's referring to a truck
    2. It sound dumb in American English.
    the MR2 stood for "Midship Runabout 2-seater". https://mag.toyota.co.uk/22-toyota-... The name MR2 stands,engine, rear-wheel drive.

Yes there is. Nobody but you and a few others would buy it.
The simple reason they offer the options they do is simply popularity of options. The masses always win.

I assume ‘Rally’ became the North American definition as only a total dork would refer to his truck as a ‘runabout’.

Honestly, it sounds like something a person from the UK or Australia would say, but that’s only a guess.
