    Wow, that’s super shitty

OP you’re a better man than me. I’m pretty calm normally but that shit would set me off. I probably wouldn’t actively go looking for him, but if I seen him we’d be having some words at a minimum. The ball would be in his court as to how everything played out after that.

I don’t care what kind of problems or issues he has, he just created a new one. If you allow this behavior to continue, it will. There is pretty much 0 accountability or repercussion anymore. If you called the police, unless the guy had a warrant, he’s only getting an appearance ticket. You know he won’t appear for that. If he got sent for a psych exam probably only a quick evaluation or 72 hour hold. He’ll never pay any sort of restitution, or even apologize for the damage.

Hopefully this guy wises up, but more than likely he does it again to another unexpecting soul.

Well, you pretty much gotta carry on like you have. If I seen him I would just have a few choice words. It’s a shitty situation all round. Karma is a bitch, it’ll come back around for him I'm sure.

People act like it's no big deal, 'give the guy a break' or 'he can't help it' and it's easy to dismiss it and take higher ground I guess...but how would those same people react if he'd pushed that cart into their 4 year old daughter?
Obviously you cant fix this type of shitty behavior, but to look away and let it continue is insane.
I'd report it if nothing else.

I'm honestly torn on this. Of course its a big deal, it would absolutely gut me, but is it worth the effort to spend more mental effort on it? I'd report it for insurance purposes, and then look into preventative measures like looking for more secure parking, and start rebuilding what was senselessly taken. But I'd hold no hope of going after the individual that perpetrated it. The sad truth is that you can't punish someone who is already sitting at rock bottom, as you can't really make his day any shittier than it already is.

I wouldn't go after him either, that would be a losing situation for both parties...but to turn a blind eye only encourages more shitty behavior. I'd call the police and call insurance, they can deal with it however they want, but (to me) it beats accepting it.

    Yeah.
You can certainly check into PDR, which I think continues to improve in what it can achieve, but that metal is pretty creased. PDR might get most of it out, but there might be some visible spots left where the sharp creases are. If you want it perfect, you'll likely have to have a normal repair done. But some awesome PDR guy would probably love to prove me wrong.

In the time I lived in San Diego I surfed every weekend and sometimes after work at Ocean Beach near an area called Dog Beach, it is overrun with homeless. I spent some time with them and always brought water, jerky, and other real food for ones who wanted it. Most of the time I just talked and hung out with those that were willing.

Some of them live out of their cars, I hung out with one guy who was literally a phone tech for Dell. He would tap into local restaurant wi-fi and it made him enough money to feed his wife and himself, who lived with him in the car.

Another grew to be a great friend, he also surfed and we paddled out together a lot, lived out of his van with his dog.

Many others are just there, life has dealt them a shit hand and they're just trying to survive. Lots of vets who fought, came home, and were rejected by society. That would drive me to insanity too.

Some of them have mental issues, yes, but honestly, in a city of 3.5 million in my experience there weren't a lot of them, but they were there. Alcoholism is by far a greater culprit in this respect, but suppose that's a mental illness as well.

But the majority of the homeless I've met are homeless, one way or another, by choice. When I say choice, I mean they are too stubborn (proud?) to accept any sort of help to get off the streets. There are gospel missions everywhere that would feed them, help them get jobs, get into a home, get their shit together, but they don't want to live by any of society's rules. A small portion who choose to live on the street are the most spiritual people I've ever met, they choose to live without a home or a job because they want absolute freedom, and I have an immense respect for that.

But a lot of them are like this guy. They are jealous of everything and everyone, feel like they are mistreated and the world owes them, and have a long list of excuses why you're the asshole and why you deserve to have your house broken into and squatted on, and why wrecking anything you've worked for is a heroic gesture. They made that choice long ago and no rehabilitation program, church, compassion, or even hard jail time will ever change them.

I have to hand it to you for taking the high road on this one, in the end our trucks and everything else are just things. When the world is done with us, it all goes back in the box anyway.

You got a point re the mental health/alcohol and other substance issues. The latter is considered mental health on its own, but so often the two are intertwined. Either the addiction caused imbalance in the natural body's processes, or self medicating with the substances.

There was a homeless man near my wife's work. Not sure of his story really. He was too proud to take any handout if you tried to give him even returnable cans, but if she left a bag of them in the back of her truck he would take them. Local businesses knew of his situation and would usually leave a meal out by a dumpster for him (they'd have gladly had him come in and eat but he wouldn't), and would leave a door open so he could at least get some kind of shelter.

Re the missions..some are so against religion that they would prefer not to use those particular places. To each thine own I reckon..currently know someone in that situation though she did capitulate and reach out.

Heh . . . if you get hungry enough even god starts to sound like a viable option. :p

I follow no "religion." I've worked Thanksgivings and Christmases at the Missions. (not all the time, I'm not St Francis but I do what I can.) They don't force anyone into their version of god, but there are rules, and that's what most of these people cannot abide. No alcohol, no fighting, no being aggressive with the volunteers, oh and the chapel is down the hall if you're interested. They pray at meals, but you don't have to, you can just sit there looking annoyed. Someone may try to talk to you but you don't have to listen, it's not like "complimentary meal and all you have to do is listen to our two hour seminar followed by a high pressure sales pitch."

Very true, very true. If I'm in that situation I wouldn't be too proud to accept help myself but that's me; then again, I was raised strict Catholic.

Rules are necessary especially in that setting I think..at least re conduct. Had a friend who was homeless for several years.
