Sorry this seems like a dumb question to post for but I've been working on it all day and still feeling lost.
    Truck is a 1999 Prerunner (2wd) auto trans w the A340E.
I have no speedo output and odometer is frozen. Tach works fine.

I'm having a tough time figuring out which sensors feed the speedo/odo and where they are. Have been reading online a lot and going through the FSM. There are three sensors on the trans, photos below.
I think the speedo sensor is the top right one on the driver's side, according to the FSM. It looks like someone already tried replacing it:

But, that sensor looks like this:
    speed sensor.jpg
and when I look up the speed sensor for this truck on rock auto etc, I get another sensor that looks like this:
    767_ULTRAPOWER AIRTEX_5S4886_1__ra_m.jpg
I can't find that sensor. Is it the lower left sensor in that pic of the driver's side? I cant figure out what that one is.

Can someone just tell me which sensor is which and which one(s) are feeding the speedo and odo on the cluster?

The other sensor is on the pass side:

There should only be 2 speed sensors.
    #1 talks to the speedo
    #2 talks to the transmission

Thanks, this helps but I'm still confused. I just don't see two speed sensors in the location that the FSM is giving, I only see the #1 speed sensor but if I'm reading that correctly it shows #2 directly underneath.

This is what I'm working with on driver's side:

Is sensor #2 the one that's wet with trans fluid? I just doesn't look to be in the same location as the FSM. Also it doesn't seem to want to come out.

The correct sensor is gear driven. Here's photo of the plastic gear that attaches to the sensor.

There are three speed sensors on the A340E, aft looking forward, drivers side midway on trany is the turbine speed sensor for ecu, then back on the tail take off there are two, one on the drivers side is also for ecu, then one on the passenger side is for your speedometer.

Added some photos of things when there apart, its a simple part to replace, good luck.

You have a '99 Prerunner too? Is it v6 auto? Mind telling me what the trans code is on the door pillar sticker? I've got A340E which the FSM lists the gear-driven speed sensor as being on driver's side but I did find it on the pass side. Trying to figure out if that was an error in the manual or whether this truck might have had an engine/trans swap

Oh thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. It's confusing because the FSM lists only #1 and #2 speed sensors for the A340E and shows them both on the driver's side. I did find the gear driven one on the pass side, now I just have to figure out which is the problem or if it's in the cluster. I have another tacoma so I'm going to try swapping the gear driven with known working.
