I have the tent and annex…just would need a trailer and rack. It would be a possibility for sure

He has just trailers to probably like 2k + or - without tent and rack. May even be less. Food for thought

Ive lived outta the back of my truck for a couple months. I found the happy middle ground of attaching a sturdy awning to the roofrack on my truck cap, then sleep in a tent underneath. Awning is super useful, tent is very cheap, tent under awning has been great protection from the elements, im talking a pacific downpour!

I did the #vanlife but then remodeled my house so to speak. Disco bumkbeds on a 2500 Chevy express, with Solar. I prefer the Toyota and awning anyday.

Sometimes I dig how RTT's look like a tent tree fort. But for me, I want to go the other direction. Hammocks and ground tents for me. I have a couple nice Kodiak canvas side ground tents as well as an REI half dome. They are both big enough to set up a cot should I want to. But even a good sleeping pad can negate the need for a cot. The Kodiaks are the perfect foul weather tent. You can add a little buddy heater to warm the place up if it's cold. I am still tweaking where I want to be for hammocks. I live in the PNW so you have to plan for anything weather wise. But nowadays, they make great tarps, underquilts, overquilts, and bugnets. You can set up super fast and as long as you know how to lay in a hammock (not like a banana) they can be comfortable and off the ground. I'm trying to minimize the crap that I think I need to enjoy myself.

Fun, funny video of someone who was enjoying their Kodiak canvas tent in a windy snow storm. Hahaha

I don’t think you can lump all RTTs together. There are different kinds, and some are better, generally the more expensive hard shell models are the ones that really offer the most benefits.

The use case for the RTT is this: they’re for people who want to move every evening to a new spot, wherever that spot might be, without much hassle. At this, they excel.

I have had a Skycamp Mini 2.0 for several years now. Compared to a ground tent, a quality hard shell RTT will be:

    • Faster and less annoying to deploy, especially in the dark
    • Warmer in cold weather
    • More comfortable, less lumpy
    • Less prone to attract creepy crawleys
    • Easier to primitive camp with (if you can park, you can sleep)
    • Faster to break down
    • More waterproof
    • More robust, less likely to collapse
    • Higher up and prettier to look out from
    • Cleaner, no constant brushing sand and pine needles
    There are some cons:
    • Can’t drive when deployed (but can carefully reposition when half deployed)
    • Expensive
    • Harder to get in and out of
    • Heavier
    • Must level the truck (note in practice I don’t find this that difficult, once you get the hang of it you just place traction boards or leveling blocks and boom, done)
    • Some campgrounds don’t allow them
Overall with wind I think it’s a wash; neither is better.
