About to give up.....

It's my damn brake pads.....

Looks like I'm missing the little springs or clips that keep the pads separated

 

3,000 plus on new front end parts, and a God damn 7 dollar part fixed it.....

Doubled up the spring clip things on both sides. Good heavens

I drove about .2 miles, on one caliper bolt, to a mechanic when I snapped one of my caliper bolts.

Not necessarily a clanking noise, more like a steady, muted bell clanging noise. Yes, both bolts were replaced.

 

Duuude. Reading this whole thread I was like “it’s the brakes it’s the brake.” I made the same mistake of not replacing those clips once upon a time. But I swore I could still hear it clicking quietly afterwards. I changed calipers/rotors to aftermarket a few years ago and never heard the sound again. So glad you found the problem.

 

What makes me the most upset. Is how many times I was digging in the front end, with the issue right in front of my face and I didn't see it..... oh well.

 

I lost a caliper bolt on mine and I thought I was screwed. I sat there on the side of the road thinking about what I was going to do. I have the tools to fix the problem, just no parts/ bolt. Luckily everything was still in tact and just needed a bolt. I sat there thinking, toyota only uses a few bolt/ nut sizes. I found the socket (17 mm I think) and went about looking and looking for the right size bolt that was not important to prevent driving. I found one, it's on the trailer hitch/rear bumper that mounts to the frame. Removed it and put the caliper back together and went about my business.

 

That’s crazily ingenious! How’d you lose a bolt on the side of the road?

 

I have those, and still have pad clap. But I haven't checked my brakes in a long time. Might be low pads too

 

Did a brake job and didn't torque the bolt down.

 

Ya, next big service (180k) I'll do new pads and Rotors along with fluids
