Help me pick out sound deadening materials on Amazon

There's only 50 different brands and kinds to choose from and I suffer from FOBO. Some products are a thin butyl rubber and some are a more thick foam product. I was thinking about getting a roll of each, but wanted some recommendations. I've installed a few sound systems in my personal vehicles over the years, but I've never bothered with dampening until now. I think the Tacoma really needs it.

I just bought a bunch of speakers @ Skar Audio because they were having a Memorial Day sale, and I want to try to make the most out of the cheap speakers, so I wanted to dampen the doors and maybe even the back wall.

SKAR didn't charge any shipping so that was great, but they did charge me taxes $33.65 which is weird because they are located in Florida and i'm in Tennessee. $397.42 was the grand total with them.

I plan on removing the sub from that SKAR box and installing it into this custom box just so it fits better in the back $224.44 with shipping:

So far i'm set back $646.08 and that was making myself by the cheaper stuff instead of splurging for top of the line audio equipment. It looks like i'll be spending at least $100 on this dampening material too. Hopefully I can sell that SKAR box or repurpose it later.

sound damping is all about the same. the major difference is going to be the quality of butyl used, thickness, and name-brand markup.

most stick with the 80 mil kilmat or siless version off Amazon. the 80mil thickness is similar to dynamat.

any of the foam products, i'm not entirely convinced are beneficial in the vehicle environment for anything less than a competition-level setup.

main issue with the Amazon stuff is that it's not a specified thickness.

in another thread, i was able to locate some info indicating that it should be around 50 mil. so it works, but is inherently less effective at mass-loading due to it's reduced mass. one could easily double it up to get 100mil of deadener, but i'm not sure it's as cost effective at that point.

Look into Resonix. It seems to be well regarded. Supposedly the best stuff out there according to some. There's a Facebook page called " the deadening" where a guy did a bunch of testing of different sound deadening if you really want to go down the rabbit hole.

 

Seen your post late. I ended up going with killmat. I have my headliner and back panel removed. Waiting for the rain to stop so I can install. I can tell anything is going to make a huge difference, this truck feels like riding in a tuna can now lol. I can't wait to get my interior pieces back in. I'm thinking about sealing off that vent that let's the air pressure go outside when you shut the doors, and instead leaving my windows cracked when I shut the doors....

 

Sound dampening film will make the walls/floor/ceiling thicker and covering some of the door holes allowing less sound in.
As far as noise from the truck goes I was wondering if spraying some rubberized spray on your panels before the film, would help reduce vibration of the panels since sound is vibration.

I've heard that blocking that back vent is not a good idea. Something about the airbags going off and the pressure of that being dangerous if that vent is blocked. No clue if it's right or wrong. I have heard people using pool noodles to cut down on road noise. I think if you just search for "pool noodle mod" they should pop up.

 

all vehicles are leaky. windows that roll down and doors that open tend to be the major areas.

blocking the vents mean that the doors will require more force to close. they release the air pressure from that, as well as from the HVAC system running.

if the airbags go off, you'll likely have much larger problems anyways.

 

I went with Noico for most of the truck. I heard Kilmat had a funky smell to it.

 

what @soundman98 said I would not block them. more so for safety reasons.

It won't be a super luxury car, but id says my truck's sound dbs are similar to the Tesla we have now. Both are not super quiet, but neither are loud. On road was around 65-70dbs and 30-40db when the parked engine off.

 

I've been driving around with the killmat on the roof only. Haven't had a chance to put the headliner back in or do much else. It keeps raining! But the killmat is on the roof with no headliner and it doesn't stink much at all. I thought it might be bad without the headliner in the summer but it isn't all that bad.

 

Nice that’s good to know. Based on reviews I skipped kill at and went noico but it seems like a good choice some reviewers kwpt me from it. I drove around for a year with no headliner and no interior panels and blocs was great. Will have to give killmat a look again next time.

I bought some of the siliss 80mil from amazon. it was ok, not very thick.
I also bought Amazons sound deadening. That was MUCH thicker and produced more of a deadening on the door from what I can tell.
