Does anyone have data on the unsprung weight of a 1st gen 4x4 Tacoma rear end?
    This includes:
Wheels & Tires (I know this will vary, I assume 80lb per side)
    Axle/diff/etc
    Brakes
    Springs

just what are you trying to figure out?

just how precise does the answer need to be?

Any used part yard that ships an axle housing then factor in shipping weight of the springs and wheels and tires.

    Could quote the figure .

    Good luck !

    Hopefully within 10% or so.

I am doing an experiment to determine why my truck rides so poorly with nothing in the bed. In order to do the calculations, I need to know the weight of the unsprung mass.
I already measured the total weight at 1585lbs on the rear axle with a 1/4 tank of gas.

Simple answer because it is built to carry a load.

If you never carry any cargo why have a truck?

I think most people who drive a truck rarely carry a load.

That makes no sense to me The only time I drive the truck it works to carry something.

My 4Runner gets around just fine and rides so soft compared to the unladen truck.

I understand my reason why put up with a rough ride if you never haul anything.

It just needs a few pounds in the bed. I don't haul anything and I daily my 1st gen. I have Dakar HD rear springs but I have a steel bumper and carry a full size tire. It's not uncomfortable at all for me.

I guess it comes down to what your comfortable with.

I feel comfortable driving my Tacoma when empty to me ride is no big deal as long as it handles the loaded weight fine.

Yet the fact so many drive a empty truck and complain about the ride is interesting.

Why have a Truck if it never hauls anything is what I will never understand.

It's a vehicle. You have a 4runner and don't always haul people around, right? Same thing.

It has larger wheels and tires than stock, that's it.

I don't expect it to ride like a luxury car, but it's pretty jarring as it is without weight in the bed

So anyway... philosophical merits of ride quality aside...

Does anyone have weights of the rear end?

    Great, thanks.

    Elocker & brakes = 290
    Wheels & Tires = 170 pounds
Half of shocks = 5 pounds
Half of leaf springs = ??
Half of drive shaft = ??

So probably looking at about 500 pounds total?

Cant find my packing slip, but my dakar heavies were pretty stout. Shaving a few leafs off to get to OEM, your prob at 45-50ish # per leaf spring.
