Anyone know the statistics of the front timing cover leak? The chances of it actually happening? I have a 2023 sr5 v6. Hoping mine doesn’t ever leak there. When I bought the truck I sprayed a liquid gasket maker all down the right side of the timing cover up and behind the power steering pump. Hoping this works in preventing it ever from leaking there.

I’d think any statistics here would be made up booshit, except for the few dealer techs, they could probably give you a fairly decent estimate of what they see. I would consider model years in those results though.
I wouldn’t stress on the what if? here, and go enjoy life.

No one knows expect for Toyota.

Applying gasket maker over the timing cover wasn't the best idea. Sounds like a perfect way for Toyota to deny a warranty claim if you do end up with a timing cover leak.

Also gasket maker typically only works when trying to seal two mating surfaces together. Just applying it to a bare metal surface doesn't really do anything.

This product is designed to go on the outside to seal oil leaks. I don’t think it would void warranty it doesn’t do anything beside dry clear and create a gasket,

    Do the math!!!!

    X divided by Y x 100 = % timing covers failures

X = number of timing covers replaced
Y = total number of 3rd Gen Tacos produced

Yes, just enjoy your truck. Luck of the draw on the timing cover leak. I think there are over 1.5 million of these 3rd gen's on the road. Hasn't' been a big issue AFAIK. Being informed is great but spending too much time agonizing on some of these issues here it's not healthy.

    What product did you use?

Toyota looks for reasons to deny a warranty claim. If I was the dealer and saw some sort of sealant around the timing cover, I would automatically assume someone was in their trying to create a cheap fix.

I would scrape it all off and enjoy the truck.

Made by permetex. I just figured it was a good idea to apply it in hopes of saving myself hassle with having my engine removed and dealing with dealerships and possible sloppy work

A sealant works on the mating surface, not plastered over the seam.

What you "sprayed" won't help if it's going to leak.

Also qualifies as "sloppy work" in my book lol.

OP is worried about his timing cover leak but just voided his warranty on it.

I would remove the stuff (if possible) asap and just drive the truck.

How do you know it would void the warranty?

True that. OP said "I just figured it was a good idea to apply it in hopes of saving myself hassle with having my engine removed and dealing with dealerships and possible sloppy work"

That's why I commented that spraying the stuff on there was "sloppy work" in my book lol.

I'm not saying it 100% will, but if you ever have an oil leak and the tech sees gasket maker all over the outside of the timing cover, they will automatically think someone already attempted a crappy repair. Thus denying the claim. Toyota 1000% will deny a claim if they think someone else has attempted a repair on said issue already.

Sometimes Toyota will even require pictures before they approve high dollar warranty work (like a timing cover reseal).

Toyota doesn't like to approve expensive warranty work and they look for every way to deny. All auto manufacturers do this.

Well if it ever starts leaking I’ll just clean it all off then.

It’s made to be sprayed on the outside of leaking low pressure joints. Such as timing covers, oil pans etc.
