4th Gen 4Runner Back Up Camera Adapter Harness?

Anyone know if there is a wiring harness that will adapt a 2004 4Runner with the JBL Synthesis system back up camera plug to a newer scion T10015 head unit?

I did the scion head unit upgrade, got all the other wiring done so everything works (radio, Bluetooth) but there was nowhere on the new head unit to plug the back up camera wiring.

So here is the oem (old) head unit back:



I believe it’s one of top three connectors (black, blue, or white… none of those could plug into the new head unit). Here is the back of the new head unit:



Just wondering if there is a way to get the backup camera working on the new unit (scion T10015).

Obviously I’ll have to take it all apart to figure this out.

 

TTT, I’m at a loss trying to google this. I have a feeling I’ll need like two harnesses, one to connect from OEM connector to harness A then another one from harness A to new scion head unit. I dunno, bout to give up and buy a newer aftermarket head unit at this point.

What. Year did the radio come from?

the cam wires are normally black,white red and a shield all bundled togethe

 

you need metra Axxess AX-TOYCAM1 the reverse trigger goes into pin 2 on the 28 pin

 

Did not figure this out with off the shelf parts. Having a custom harness adapter made by auto harness house.com. They are including the reverse signal wire for the 28pin #2 slot.

I talked with crutchfield for a while and the guy said he doesn’t have any harnesses to adapt oem backup camera to any aftermarket head units so I’m sorta thinking due to that and my extensive searching, one doesn’t exist.


the toycam harness above won’t work it’s the wrong connector type but you are correct about needing the reverse signal. Sorry don’t know how to multi quote from a phone

 

Got the new custom auto harness house harness installed. Still no backup camera. So I’m waiting for the company to write back their thoughts good news is while I was in there I adjusted the

$66 TYTO-01 JBL Amplifier Interface Harness, BLACK

TYTO-01 harness potentiometer and damn it totally changed the quality of the sound. So the sound of the new head unit is dialed in, just got to figure out this damn backup camera!

here’s the back of the head unit with the new harness, anyone notice anything blatantly wrong with the installation?



The new backup camera harness is the bottom right of the pic then the black and brown wires trailing off that (for the reverse signal). As you can see i installed the brown wire into pin 2 of the 28 pin connector. Pin clicked in and everything so it should be seated correctly. The other two connectors on this harness i just plugged into the only two remaining connectors that would fit into the new harness female connectors.

 

Autoharnesshouse replied to my email and asked if i can verify through the Head Unit settings that its registering when i put the vehicle in reverse. However, i cannot seem to find the head unit setting that shows me this. I googled it for other head units and know what he's looking for... like a system setting screen that shows "reverse - Off" when not in reverse or "reverse - on" when in reverse. Unfortunately, can't find that setting.

So basically there's no way for him to be sure his wiring is working correctly, or if the head unit for some reason just isn't registering that i've put the car in reverse.

Any ideas?

 

Voltage on the camera out when in reverse?

 

Do you think i might need a 'step down converter'? i don't know what the voltage is and don't have a multimeter or anything like that, but its either 6v or 12v right?

 

Most Tacoma cameras are 6v, but I’m not sure what that 4Runner H/U might take. It could very well be 12v.

 

If the voltages are in fact different between camera and head unit, would there be any indication (like crappy backup camera view or head unit glitching when shifting into reverse) or would nothing happen. Right now, nothing happens on the head unit screen when i shift into reverse but everything (besides step down converter) is hooked up.

Well, if the H/U is 12v and the camera is 6v, nothing would happen, black screen. If the H/U is 6v and the camera is 12v, you might get a really crappy pic.

 

I don't have any special insight to the vehicle or the head unit here. Heck, in my '05 I have a '15 head unit and can't even get the phone to pair b/c the BT mic apparently doesn't have power. It could be worthwhile to measure the voltage on the camera connector terminals and observe if 6v, 12v or 0v and that may only be supplied while in reverse? Also worth probing the reverse terminal to ensure it's 12v when in reverse. If you can identify it.

Honestly, I'm considering just going with a joying or even hog wild and a 3rd pioneer. messing with OEM head units is not time well spent, sound q is terrible. The only reason I swapped in my '05 was to hopefully get the phone working with a unit that had built in anti-theft (on the assumption that nobody would steal a 10 year old oem radio). But I think I might trend towards "just buy aftermarket and replace it if stolen" because the stock radios truly suck.

A black screen would actually be some indication something is working. The head unit face doesn't change when i shift into reverse... just shows whatever was already on it (song title, etc). I feel like i'm too deep into this head unit installation where i don't want to quite right before the finish line. Sound is actually really good, BT and phone mic all work great... just need to nail down this pesky backup camera. Its near impossible to find any useful information on the web regarding wiring/specs of both the 4runner system and the newer Scion head unit unfortunately.

If no black screen then sounds like reverse trigger is not activating.
Any multi-meter is fine as long as it can do 12v. I have one from some auto parts store which is nearly as good as the nice fluke I got via TWSS if not better in some ways (just how it all works). No need at all to spend, even an analog meter is fine, shoot, an led bulb w socket and bare wires is decent but won't tell you 6v vs 12v so well.

 

For my '02 Tundra I had to tap reverse from the relay output (it was in the cab above the driver kick panel, red w black stripe). Haven't yet done my '05 Tacoma yet (backup camera is definitely on my list, in a bin, waiting to get looked at some day). Shoot, I haven't even connected power for my gentex mirror on the '05 despite having all the wires ready in the driver kick panel. Someday.
