I love turbos , I had an 88 Supra that went 200k with no turbo issue....head gasket yes but turbo was fine lol. I only got rid of it because it was rusting to shit

People still think it's the 80's and every turbo is a Buick.

Toyota has been putting turbos in vehicles for a very long time (most of them don't come state side), and many of those vehicles are in 3rd world countries with shit infrastructure and little vehicle maintenance.

Some old school guys too. They just are used to NA engines and anything beyond isn't visceral enough. To each their own but sounds a bit superficial.

Spark plug changes are going to be nice and easy now. I wonder where the oil filter will be

Have nothing against turbos, but if they aren’t getting better fuel economy, what is the point? Just stick a 5.0 liter V8 in there and be done with it.

Are the emissions really going to be that much different if they are burning roughly the same amount of fuel?

Seems to be adding a bunch of complexity without much advantage, especially the hybrid version.

My buddy’s F350 with the 6.2 V8 gasser averages 17 mpgs, my 3G is 18…. Looking at the GM twins and their turbo 4s, fuel economy (or lack there of) isn’t any better.

Turbo's provide power, they aren't necessarily a fuel savings device, though they do help sometimes. But adding more air requires more fuel. The electric motor helps with that but more lower end torque and larger fuel saving. All dependent on driving style though.

It is more efficient, but the economy side of the efficiency goes out the window with how large trucks are getting these days. Be interested to see what the final sticker curb weight and dimensions of a higher trim Tacoma is. The new GM twins are large AF.

Can’t have your cake and it too apparently… ;):D

While it is the last Gen Colorado, mid-size is the new full-size.

Oh I know all that, seems like splitting hairs at the end of the day. While adding unnecessary complexity for very little gains if any.

Well I think a lot of people were complaining about lack of power in the Tacoma's and it looks like they delivered more power but now some don't like the method they gave more power? It's a complex bunch here.

People said the same thing about the Tundra as well...and well, between a batch of turbos and now apparently a batch of engines that are showing up at 20k or so...they may have a little bit of right to be concerned. The US engine plant for the 3.4 is not off to the best start.

Or maybe before the recommended intervals, I'm not sure I would roll 10K oil changes with the turbo.

We can only hope this is a learning experience for Toyota and it's unfortunate this is happening. But doesn't necessarily mean problems will translate to the new Tacoma powertrain.

Possibly, as long as wherever the tacoma engine is being built handles their business a little better or their parts sources are better quality.

I’m not sure I would consider similar economy between the 3G/4G Tacoma to be no gain when you factor in the power output changes, and where that power comes in on the tach.

Remember when most pick ups on the road were regular cabs and those seemed to work for people.
