    Hey taco folks!

I do not have a key for my tailgate, I've tried to get one, it's a 2016 that came with a "regular" key, dealership cannot get it from the VIN or the numbers on the cylinder. It's a lost cause trying to get a replacement for me at this point.

That said, any recommendations for an OEM or aftermarket tailgate lock that locks and unlocks with the key fob? That is not a deal breaker, but I will require a key for when/if the auto-lock feature stops working.

I doubt I'd be installing it myself but might take a crack at it. "My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools."

    TYIA for any advice.info!

Here you go. Ordering just a key is much more expensive than purchasing an entire lock assembly.

Would a pop n lock work ? I did it on mine, not bad at all. I did previously install the remote lock/start N2 designs system but it may work

Thanks but I would like an automatic lock solution. Will keep this in mind as well.

Doesn't that add autolock so I would not be able to open it with a key if/when it stops working and it's locked?

So what do you want? A key or automatic/electronic lock? Lol

If you want both, then buy both of the suggestions you quoted.

You need to buy a precut key or an oem lock assembly along with an aftermarket tailgate electronic lock. Tailgate lock kits, aftermarket or OEM, do not include a key lock.

The link at the bottom compares a couple of aftermarket electronic tailgate locks. I do not believe that the accessory OEM lock kit is applicable for a 2016.

As an FYI, when I lost the tailgate key on a previous 2016 several years ago, I visited a local dealer’s parts dept. with my vin and they ordered the correct precut replacement key. I was required to show proof of vehicle ownership.

So if you loose your tailgate key on a 2016, you're shit out of luck?

Yep they made a keyholder in the console for it. The strangest thing was seeing the iteration for the tailgate lock through the first few years of the 3rd gen.

OEM tailgate lock kit has never let me down. Haven’t touched the tailgate key since I installed it. High quality part, convenience added, awesome solution.

Wow, that is a mASSive help! With your stellar reading comprehension and reasoning skills you should ask the folks that run this site for monetary compensation with what you bring to the table here. I'm sure that you are a huge ASSet to this community and forum, keep up the good work!

Thank you for your help and suggestions, I will look into this.

That has been my experience; I have tried multiple dealerships with no luck/the same answer of "we cannot help with this". If anyone works at a dealership and would like to try and help with this, I would welcome the assistance. Then I'd just need the aftermarket auto-lock thingy.

Great to hear and I'm glad that this works for you. I would need to keep the key available since I have a metal tonneau cover (Lomax, I highly recommend this if you want/need one) and would be in a bind if the auto-locked failed shut and I didn't have the key.

The guys I spoke to wanted me to leave my truck there overnight and/or just didn't seem interested in helping...

You didn't, just having a little fun. Gotta have thick skin in dealing with places like this. It's still a great place for getting and sharing information so it's worth it to me. Have a good week Chewy!
