In Japan, don’t they have to turn them in after so many years? Would guess they get used harder over short distances, since they don’t have vast expanses of interstates like we do. Interstate driving is much easier on equipment. Those super high mile examples we see here are mostly driven on them. My ‘99 with 435K might be a rare sample of high mile and rarely on the interstate.

They rock crawl in Europe and Japan like we do here. They tow boats, campers, jet skis etc. Using 4cyl toyota trucks and cars in the EU and Japan and even 3cyl Suzuki Jimney's. I'm not here to try and convince you but just letting you know the facts.

My mechanic buddies who own repair shops who also are Toyota fan bois are bitching up a storm about the new turbo gassers.

Toyota delivered on the power, screwed us yet again on fuel economy (or lack their of). Quite possibly are going to ruin their reliability reputation with this too. Only time will tell, and I am running out of that.

The Chevy half ton oil burner is looking good to me, too bad it cost as much as a 1 Tonner. Why is that Chevy can do it, but Toyota can’t??? Another one of life’s mysteries…

Until it's proven otherwise, nobody knows the longevity, ability, reliability of the new powertrains in the Tacomas. Predictions though are like buttholes, everyone has got them.

They also get diesels, different animal than a gas turbo. Which is what I believe @TacomaWorld2023 is referring to.

True, I won’t trust my 3rd Gen until I get at least 200K on it. Just turned 32K, noticed a slight high pitched noise at idle yesterday. Getting a lot of rain recently, might be a belt…or idler pulley (already!?)

Not even sure if I am going to keep it past 100K though…weird finally broke down and bought a new truck after 20 years, and now I have the new vehicle bug, can’t stop thinking about what is next. Doesn’t help a couple people at work trade in every 6 months. One just got a new Bronco…I like that thing!

I know, but don’t they have to turn them in by law at a certain age. So no real long term ownership.

I have no clue. Could be in Japan. But in Australia, Africa, UAE. They can keep them as long as anyone can. Japan has weird laws.

Found this, not required by law however fees go up on vehicles older than 10 years, while they typically go down here. States like CA and AZ actually penalize new vehicle purchases, because the registration fees are much higher on new cars, quite the shock when I moved from PA to AZ, then go down over time. Not much of an incentive to buy a newer cleaner burning vehicle. Idaho doesn’t do that, registration is far more reasonable here.

“The average age of cars in Japan is between 7-8 years old, but new cars tend to enter the secondary market a few years before that. 2-3 is extreme, its probably more like 4-6. Btw, this is very similar to many European countries, and just a little bit less than the US which is about 6 years for new cars.

100k kilometers is considered old. Yes, the mileage is low, but Japanese drivers also tend to drive less on average (about half as much as American for example) so the age of the vehicles becomes much more similar to cars in other countries with a lot higher mileage.

There are actually several economic factors that drive people to purchase new cars. The shaken is just one part of the story. Of course that increases for older cars, plus there is up to a 50% surcharge for cars older than 10 years. Taxes, maintenance, and secondary insurance costs can also go up quite a bit with older cars. Add to that there are tax incentives for purchasing new cars, such as eco subsidies, which further drive down the cost of a new car.

There's also the possibility with a leased car that you can get all the advantages in reducing your yearly costs (taxes, shaken, maintenance) without really increasing your monthly lease costs, and it becomes similar to how we can get new cell phones every year or two without really paying more out of pocket.”

In Ireland the older the vehicle the more $$ to license it.

I think the point was most Americans use their 3G Tacomas to haul groceries. Some go a step further and haul 1000 lbs of over landing gear on pavement.

My wife's cars have 2 pedals -- 1 of them has to be floored at all times. The pads and rotors on her '17 4runner (she has a '22 now) were *cooked* at 50k.

Plus, think of all the "suspension travel" that those seats add to the specs of the new truck... Can't believe this is where the extra 1.5" of "travel" comes from.

And the Pro is 3" wider. But...that extra 3" comes from wheel offset, NOT wider axles and longer LCAs & UCAs; you know, things that would really be nice to have in the top tier trim level truck that will most likely be $60K+. That extra 3" width is a joke.

Like them wasting money on those gimmicky suspension sets??? While all they had to do is offer longer control arms to get the extra 1.5” inches of travel, which actually would have enhanced performance. Some of their decisions baffle me. Well not really…after 3 decades of ownership, the “Toyota Letdown” has become the norm. V8 in the 4Runner but not the Tacoma, most everywhere else in the world gets a diesel, but not here. No manual trans in the cheaper base models. Some of us like like simple utility, and use our trucks as trucks. They finally offer a better utility truck and they screw that up too, let’s make the utility space hard to get to by eliminating the access cab. Not even sure why I stick around…half baked nostalgia? Though my 3rd Gen might be my last Toyota I’ll own.

A lot of people in the south have added 15 to 20” of width to their trucks. Maybe the 5th gen will come like this.

See that shit here in Idaho, it is the weirdest thing seeing farm kids (or youth acting like farm kids) trying to roll hard listening to rap while rolling coal.
