Check this company out as well when you look at automatic oilers.

    https://www.scottoiler.com/us/

They've been around forever it seems and some of my Iron Butt friends use them.

I'd love a shaft drive, but on a smaller bike you can't find them. I think it's the added power loss of a shaft system that makes it only viable on bigger bikes.

Big time. They add weight and complexity for sure. Never had an issue with chain drive stuff but proper maintenance is key.

My VTX was shaft drive, and I loved it. I hate chains, but if I don't want to be on a huge bike I don't have much choice.

Shaft drive is nice for certain applications. Chain drive does give the advantage of being able to change gear ratios easily. Belt drive is nice in that there is almost no maintenance but not suitable for real high output bikes. I currently have one of each variant but the shaft drive gets the most use.

plenty of small bore shaft driven bikes out there though

lots of scooters are shaft driven, as well as little kid dirt bikes and atvs

my guess is its a combination between low maintenance and added safety

Really? I've not seen any scooter that isn't CVT, similar to SxS uses. ATVs don't generally run on the roads, so it makes sense there because they don't need all the power bikes do for freeway use. As for any dirt bike, kid or otherwise, I know nothing. Never been into them.

in that case let me be the first one here to make the suggestion...
you really should try one out if you ever get the chance

but yea tons of cvt scooters...

bmw, yamaha and suzuki all offer shaft driven scooters as well though

I've been on them, but I'm not a big fan. I like old man fun. I don't like jumping, wheelies, or hill climbing. LOL

True, but I can do that on my CB500X too. I like twins and fuel injected. Plus, I'm short. Dirt bikes have so much suspension that I'd need a rope ladder to mount up.

Coolest bike I ever got to ride (around a parking lot, heavily supervised) was both chain AND shaft drive.

And it was 2 wheel drive :D

For sure. LOL My point is that my little bike will do everything I want to do and more. I may eventually get a bigger more capable bike, but that's down the road if I decide I want more touring ability. The 500X will do it, but a bigger bike will do it more comfortably for sure. Then again, I may just do the mods to help like bar weights, seat concepts seat, and other stuff to dampen the vibrations. If I keep losing weight it'll offset anything I add to the bike, so the performance shouldn't take a major hit for adding stuff.

This is what I did, and it worked perfectly. Got a piece of aluminum from Amazon, made my own tail rack, then drilled that. If anything happens, you're not out $90+. I think i spent $12 on the aluminum, and $10 on the hardware. I drilled for the box, it didn't work, so now just put the Kriega 5L back on for a tail bag. But Im keeping that.

I don't have a tail rack either. All in all, I've banned myself from buying luggage until I have at least 1,000 miles on the bike. At the rate I'm going that'll be sometime in 2025. :anonymous: The only exception I'm allowing for that rule is the Giant Loop Diablo tank bag if it goes on sale. I really want that one, and a tank bag is useful for any ride, not just long ones.

I plan to try and ride more in the next few weeks, but even then I think I'll probably wait for Giant Loop to put the Coyote bag on sale. I've seen it set up on a CB500X and it's more than enough for anything I'll do and on a good sale it'll be something I can tell myself I saved money on.
