It's stupid easy to increase power from a turbo engine.

Yeah toyota is notorious for building extremely fragile engines

Ugg, seriously. That 2JZ in the Supra, and even that 4 cylinder Tacoma engine, total glass engines.

Yup. The Toyota 2JZ era is long gone. There is a reason why BMW supplies the supra engine. The B58 is one of the best engines ever made and makes crazy power when modded.

From Toyota now we get low friction piston rings that have less tension pushing them out into the cylinder wall which is horrible for boost. OMG we saved .01234 MPG because of this!

Are the low tension rings in the new 2.4t, or are you just shouting into the void?

Start with 2.4 liters, boost to 300-350hp. What could possibly go wrong? I can’t wait for all of the tampered & abused turbo trucks to hit the used car market in a few years. And when they blow up of course they’ll blame Toyota.

    V6 me please.

People will be blowing these motors up when increasing power through the turbo system, and people will blame Toyota. Could bring resale values down, if there is alot of that going on. Probably won't happen until there are a lot turbo charged Tacomas on the used market.

Wow, the pearl clutching going on lol. There will be some meat left on the bone for reasonable increases in power with a tune. Ford has a factory tune for the ranger, with a warranty even, that gives a nice bump up in power. They are not blowing up in droves, either. I expect the Toyota to be able to handle the same. Now whether or not to do it, is up to the individual as to whether or not they feel it is necessary. But I am sure the engine will be capable of handling it. I'm pretty sure Toyota will introduce higher performance packages down the road as upscale performance vehicles to counter offerings by their competitors.

Plenty of 4cyl turbo engines making that power. STi and EVO for starters, no issues there.

The T24A is replacing the 8AR. Has anyone seen the max PSI for that? I imagine the T24A could be similar.

The 3rd Gen has been supercharged to the moon and they don't blow up. The 2.4 is engineered and built for boost, with forged con rods and a beefy crankshaft. I bet a mild tune could net 325 HP and 400 TQ reliably.

Yep. It’s not 1996 anymore when turbo cars were an enthusiast novelty.

Priceless. I owned an Evo IX. My 4G63 was heroic, but I had no intention keeping it past powertrain warranty, and that Mitsu definitely did not weigh 4900lb. I’ve had some seriously great turbo cars, just don’t want one in my truck off warranty. Sure the materials & engine management have improved dramatically since Toyota punted its last turbo truck way back in the ‘80’s, but unfortunately the basic physics last forever.

There’s actually some really good arguments here for why a turbo Taco doesn’t completely suck. My Gen4 advice is buy it new, have some fun, dump it under warranty, don’t look back. If you want a long term relationship with your truck, find a low stress V6 in a 2nd or 3rd gen.

Have you seen what people do to these trucks to fit larger tires? Or the dash cam videos of people just driving these trucks on the road hitting shit, cause they got the right of way? That's not counting the youtube, insta, and tiktok videos of shenanigans? People can mod and drive their truck anyway they chose. Throwing a turbo in the mix, when people like turning up the boost should prove for some entertaining situations.
