ahh I'm not sure how the diabetic part changes it. According to this post I found, it doesn't seem to change much but I guess it also depends on which type you have (Endurance Training and Type 2 Diabetes - Taking Control Of Your Diabetes® (tcoyd.org). I know there is that pro road cycling team with all diabetes athletes so fueling is definitely possible. I also know it is possible to do endurance sports on low carb/keto diets. TBH it might be a good idea to hit up a sports nutritionist or dietitian to see what they say, I know some insurances provide those services for free.

The nice thing about the feed is that those strava credits stack up with the regular feed credits. I think if you spend $100 on an order you get $10 in credits. If you buy in bulk $100 in nutrition can last a decent amount of time.

I for sure do not take it for granted. I made the move to the Rockies in my late 20s (20 years ago) from the east coast. The snow, terrain, and accessibility of SLC lured me in quick. I moved to Boulder, CO for 6 years, and came back. Nothing beats SLC for the variety of activities I love to do.
The access to the Utah desert is the icing on the cake.

Ha! Yeeepp. I rode the Decoy that day. This early in the season that would be a big-ass climb, and I'd be too tired to enjoy the DH. I actually was planning on riding the normal bike that day, but my buddy backed out last minute so I took the ebike. That's a long and boring climb by yourself.
Honestly, 4K isn't that bad man. Just pace yourself from the get-go and you'll make it. For bigger days I usually drink a Nalgene full of water an hour before the ride, drink a protein shake, pack some gummy bears for my reward at the top, and a standard water bottle. Keep my HR in the 150s and spin.
Edit: in the winter? Shit, I ride the lifts and shred some pow. I HATE stationary bikes and road bikes.

Long story made too short: DuPont Chemical Company owned it. Had a plant there that made x-ray film and silicone products. They moved/left/abandoned the plant and it was declared a federal superfund site because of ground and water contamination/pollution. The last of the park to be cleaned up was called the donut hole due to being in the center of the forest. It was turned over to the state in 2016.

Most of what you read online focuses on chain of ownership or how it became to belong to the state but glosses over or doesn’t even mention the contamination left behind.

Where the new Ecusta brewery sits has a sad history of pollution as well. Too common.

Disclaimer: I’m probably wrong so don’t believe or repeat any of that o_O

haha, I did the same thing. I ordered some things from skratch and lmnt through thefeed. you have to get a minimum order but between my gf and me, it worked out. I was more interested in trying lmnt. Currently heavy on the liquid IV train because it just tastes good, imo.

LMNT was palatable but it didn't come with extra sugars for the energy boost that i like and skratch was too flavor-less. Needed to make it quite heavy to make skratch taste good to me. but, i'm not done experimenting just yet. haha.

For serious rides and races, i'll probably stick to liquid IV unless i find something that works better.

I try that but the snowboarding fitness and biking fitness are absolutely not the same lol. I still get cooked doing 1500 feet. Especially when I go up to Tahoe and start at 6500 feet

if you want to keep experimenting, you could try GU Roctane drink mix. I tried the lemon berry and thought it was really good with about 26ish oz of water or whatever is in those bigger purist water bottles. the only thing that sucks is it has caffeine so not ideal for continual use. They have a strawberry hibiscus flavor without caffeine that I need to try.

Damn, I don't know how you guys do it! I go through a lot of fluids when I ride. I can get through 1-1.5 liters of water in a 10-15 mile ride (New England ride, so 100' elevation per mile sort of ride) and I sip on the Gatorade in the water bottle to keep electrolytes up. I'm headed to VT where we'll hopefully get over 20 miles and 200' per mile and I'll switch to the 3L hydration pack for that trip. I sweat under water so I guess I tend to dehydrate relatively quickly in the warm weather (or maybe I'm just old).

i used to run a lot in and just after high school. no water on 1-2 hour runs. guess it conditioned my body. i can go about an hour on the bike before i feel the need to really start drinking. something ive been working on is just sipping as i ride. thats probably better for me as i get older

Similar. Soccer and distance/endurance trail runner for most of my life.

Even in the humidity laden southeast I’m set with a single water bottle per average ride. I’ll bulk up for longer rides or planned events, but that generally consists of a single bottle mixed with Skratch and some gummies.

Pretty sure my body has just acclimated to living in the pain cave.

Ooh, I'm gonna have to try this. Cramping is my biggest problem. I can get a 2nd/3rd/4th wind and be out for hours... until my leg cramps. I once had to ride the brakes and sit thru the downhill of a trail we rode because of said cramping. SUCKED!!

I'm posting as a reminder to myself to come back with some nutrition info when I have more time. I've been making my own sucrose/fructose drinks with sodium and magnesium. I try to target 90g of carbs per hour for hard rides. 60g on easier days.

Off the shelf I've really got on well with GU Roctane and Tailwind.

If you're not fueling your rides you're doing a disservice to yourself both on and off the bike. Though... There is room for fasted riding but that's a whole kettle of fish.

Even if you can get away with no carbs, water, whatever, you're paying for it one way or another. Either from that ride, or after the ride, or on the next ride.

Man, I was hoping to head out tomorrow for a ride in Big Bear... but I cant find SaltSticks, Tailwind anywhere near me. I can find GU gels at my local Dicks Sporting good. Any particular kind I should be looking for?

    Screenshot_20230614_173628.jpg

I usually ride with 2.L of water, one bottle of Gatorade, and a couple of Clif bars.

    I know NOTHING about nutrition.:homer:

Tbh I don’t like how Gu gels taste and that would be the main reason to stay away haha. Otherwise they are fine.

nothing wrong with water, Gatorade, and clif bars. People can argue about the ingredients of Gatorade and clif bars from a health point of view but from an endurance sport point of view they are fine. There are better options but looking at the carbs you get 21g from 12oz of Gatorade and 40ish from a clif bar. That puts you at 60 which should be fine. If you are going all out then you may want to find something else to add maybe fructose or maltodextrin, just be aware maltodextrin can mess some people’s stomachs up if you aren’t used to it.

for salt/electrolytes, I like base salt personally but the whole purpose in my point of view is separating out the amount of electrolytes you intake from how much you are eating/drinking. You don’t always want the same ratio of electrolytes to water. Figuring that out will only come from experience in my opinion.

a couple notes, there are a ton of opinions out there on nutrition, what works for me may not work for you. Also, if you ever cramp, just note that it could be dehydration, low electrolytes, or fatigue. Lastly, I would taste stuff on shorter rides before using it on long rides, your stomach may turn to knots. I’ve been using the same stuff for like 2 years so I know it works for me.

Saw this on reddit. Seems like a pretty cool thing to see the differences of places you ride. Would be a neat idea for those of you fortunate enough to ride all over the US

climbed about 1800 feet up mr toads wild ride (Tahoe rim trail segment) and it’s usually downhill only but the tops snowed in. About a 9 mile ride total with 1 mile of road at the start and end. Was gassed. Made as much fun of the climb as I could though. Cleared abt 90% of it. I need to figure out how to not bottom out in the rear so easy but then again that’s a 4.5 foot huck to flat so Idrk man.

1800 feet in 3.5 miles kicked my ass though. I always feel fat. Yet in comparison to average person I know I’m in shape. Riding shape is a whole different beast.

also I played with some burnt tree pieces because that lower portion was Caldor fire burn area from 2021. Largest fire California ever had
