I like the idea of air-bags but they aren't good if you off road. Not saying that I off-road a lot but I like to atleast keep my options open if I decide one day to. That and I question the reliability of air-bags. I dont want to be on a long road trip w/ a trailer in tow and have them start leaking or blow out or something. I haven't read anything about anyone having problems but I think I would rather just spend a little extra money and get something that I know is going to be gauranteed to work and last. I've found them online for 360 shipped and that isn't much more than the air-bags by the time I paid someone to install them. The shocks that I have on the back now are originals from the factory. I have about 75k on the truck, and with the weight of the stuff I tow I think they have taken a beating. I'm really hoping this solves my problem b/c I really have other things I would rather spend the money on. But I have a 10 hour road trip w/ the boat, gear, and 4 people planned for this spring and I want the truck to be able to handle the weight w/ ease. I dont mind going slow up hills but bottoming out of bumps bothers me. I think I'm going to send Toytec an email and tell them how disspointed I am with there AAL. After 10k it already lost a lot of strenght. WTF... Had I know this was all it was going to last then I would have just got the OME/Dakar leaf pack in the first place. I'll know more after I install the new shocks and take it from there.

I am sure those shocks definitely need replacing. Especially since you tow quite a bit. My step dad's bilsteins on his 03 tundra and due to go and he has about 100k but also rarely tows. 75 seems about right. I would definitely email them and see what is going on. You haven't had that AAL on there very long at all! Almost a year right?

I only have 10k on the AAL so I'm guessing right around a year or so, maybe a little less.

I think this will be my next boat... HAHA.....

Hey, havn't been on here in awhile. Neil, I was thinking about your towing instability issues. I remember your original leaf pack was shot, and you did a aal to help with that. Just wonder if you are asking too much of the aal to stabilize the entire rear susp.,after all the remaining leaf pack is still shot, even though you added a leaf. The aal is carrying the entire rear susp. for you, probably not what it is designed for. I'm no mechanic by any stretch, a mechanical nightmare more like !! Just applying simple mans logic to this situatuion, (all I understand ). Hope this helps, God bless and good luck !

I was thinking about doing a vinyl color matched wrap on the bumpers too. I haven't called around yet to see if its possible, but I don't see why it wouldn't be.

I think the black on yours would look good. I'm not sure I could pull it off with mine though since its silver.

Yeah that is what I am thinking, I just thought from talking to Toytec when I first ordered the AAL that this would relieve a little stress from my leaf pack. I guess it did but your right, my AAL is probably taking the whole load on by it self w/o much strength from the original leaf pack. I'll probably end up buying the new leaf pack in the next week or so :(

So with an AAL, you simply add a leaf onto the existing OE leaf pack then? I don't know much about the lift stuff, sorry.

If thats the case then I would say you really need to get a whole new set of leafs, but it looks like you're going down that road anyway.

How was everything when you first got your truck and started hauling/towing. Did you have any issues then or has this progessed over the years?

That makes sense. Idk why I didn't think about that. I bet adding a brand new leaf pack will solve the issue completely.
that is correct. The TSB stuff you see going around.... Toyota just adds and extra leaf to the existing leafs and changes the shocks.

Yes, with an AAL it is simply that. You litterly add a leaf to the leaf pack. After I did it about 10k ago it was great, not bottoming out problems and the suspension was stiff enough to tow w/o bottoming out. Then over the last few months it has gotten progessively worst. When I first bought the truck I really didn't tow as heavy of loads as I do now. My boat was 4 feet shorter and weighted about 2-3k less. So honestly it never was really to big a problem until I bought my current boat. I wasn't away of the TSB until after I was already out of warranty. I have always seemed to have problems with the rear suspension being soft/sloppy in my truck even when it was new. At that time I just thought it was something I had to live with.

If the AAL helped, then went back to crap, It's def the packs. Don't know if some of the vendors around here make upgraded/stronger/better than OE leafs, that might not be a bad idea as well and retaining the AAL.

I'm going to first put the new shocks on the back and see if that helps, hopefully it does so I dont have to replace the whole leaf pack.

Honestly, shocks really don't have an effect on the ride height of a vehicle. Ride height comes from springs. The term "shock" is a little misleading, it's more of a vibration dampner.
