Why no Hill Start Assist on manual trannys?

I would never want my truck to have a hill start, I love it when she rolls backwards.

It's even worse when you can hear em giving gas too. In my head i'm cringing

 

I see it all the time with people driving Civics...

 

I couldn't care less if someone wrecks a civic clutch haha. I watch people locally do it with mustangs and laugh

 

Hill assist on the autos, does it apply the brakes for say 2 seconds?

 

If you need hill assist on a MT you should have bought an auto. My truck doesn't roll back on hills unless I want it to.

 

I'm ok with no hill assist , as well as no atrac, trac and other happy buttons my 08 MT doesnt have. Do wish mine had the E-locker standard though.

Hill start assist does not work IMO. It pulses the brakes allowing you to roll back and catching you for a second about 3 times and then it just dies and rolls back due to no engine running. It sucks... thats why its not in the manual.

 

We don't have subaru.

I use the hand brake when needed.

 

I was on a 45 degree hill. I lstopped and let off the gas to see what would happen. It rolled back a foot and engaged the brakes for 1 second for three times then stalled the engine and I rolled down the hill with no power. Its only useful for stopping your engine from dying when you let off the brake for a split second... it does NOT hold you still if you are on a VERY steep incline. You will move a good foot or so between pulses.

 

I never have a problem rolling back and my clutch has 166k on it.

 

It's still available across the Subaru line, including the Forester and Impreza and Outback lines, and was updated for 2010 to a full electronic system. It's also in new Jeep Wranglers and the Dodge Challenger SRT8. Variants of the technology have / are being used by (among others) Fiat, BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Saab and Cadillac.

There seem to be several people who don't quite understand how it works. When the clutch is disengaged (pedal to floor), and right after you take your foot off the brake, but before you get to the gas, the brakes continue to hold the vehicle in place for up to 3 seconds more .. or until you let out the clutch to the point of friction and apply gas.

Like I've said .. sure you can slip the clutch to hold the vehicle. And yes you can dick with the ebrake. But given that the brake sensors are already on these trucks for things like VSC and TRAC, this one seems like an easy push button addition to the dash that could help extend the life of the clutch, especially on larger vehicles.

Note I said push button ... sometimes rolling back / rocking is exactly what you want. This is a big problem with the system on the Wranglers ... it's not easy to turn off. The autos of course already have it, which is really interesting because I never use it in an auto .. they don't roll back to begin with. But there are plenty of other times when this would be a nice additional feature to have on a MT.

Handbrake works fine. Wouldn't even need that if the electronic throttle didn't have that delay built into it.

 

Being a Man works fine too. If I can do SF hills without parking brakes and shit, you all can too.

Yeah yeah .. your dick is bigger than mine. Blah blah. Like I said, it has nothing to do with not being able to drive a stick. Hell, we don't need A-TRAC or LSDs or lockers either? Or for that matter mud or snow tires. Everything's a crutch to someone who prefers more of a challenge.

I'm reminded of Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard who used to free climb totally naked, without clothing, ropes or footwear because he believed it was all crutches, and all separating man from raw skill and primal nature. That is until he tore up his feet enough. Funny how quickly the whole he-man warrior thing fades when your feet are chopped up.

No, it's not a necessary feature. But given that the sensors already exist, it seems like an easy add.

 

I'm confused. Is this a manual or auto TRD that we're talking about? Because the manual has no hill start assist function. The auto does, but if it's an auto, it shouldn't be killing your engine.
