It's all about trying to maximize profit. Toyota is not #1, Volkswagen is (global). Nobody's talking about how good VW trucks are, but VW shareholders are happy. Toyota is doing what they think will allow them to sell more, just like any other company. Sometimes you get a Bud Light scenario.

The average truck buyer would not know what upper and lower control arms are let alone why he would need extended ones. But that cool looking seat with shock absorbers, gotta have that.

It’s almost like we’re choosing to be concerned about mining for this but not oil, coal, natural gas, rare earths, etc. It’s such a weird take to me.

VW and other euros exiting diesel in America left me shocked that we can still buy them here via domestic brand. The emissions tech are obviously getting better, but it felt like a total abandonment to me when the foreign autos didn’t want to fix their issue (turning off emission controls..).

We are just as soon to see a Hilux diesel over here as we are a T4R with an IS500 V8 in it. Ain’t happening.

Toyota is number 1 for the 3rd straight year, beating out VW.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-01-30/toyota-keeps-title-as-no-1-carmaker-for-third-straight-year#:~:text=Toyota Motor Corp.,weigh on global automobile production.

So what you’re saying is, people who buy Pros are dumbasses? If you are, I full heartedly agree with you there.

Toyota does have a diesel that will pass emissions here.

    CARB compliant too.

VW also oversees Traton SE which owns Navistar, along with other Euro brand trucks. Which really does not have anything to do with VW autos and light trucks. Maybe later down the line that could translate into light truck production success. That could all change if Traton sold Navistar, or the other brands.

That’s virtually the same as the 2.8L Duramax, too. Oh, Toyota.

Toyota sells more cars, VW makes more money. Who's #1?

The diesel engine you showed is $35K. That's probably a little more than an equivalent (332 lb-ft) gas engine. If Toyota thought the US market would buy it, they would offer it.

You've already said that because the 2024 Tacoma has a gas turbo 4 you're going to get a 3/4 ton diesel instead. If the 3/4 diesel was your "second" choice", I don't think the Tacoma was ever your first choice. If Toyota lost you as a Tacoma customer because of the 2024 changes, they'll pick up another and more to replace you.

Which forum are going to so I can go there and denigrate your choice?

It is $35K from a private installer, bulk of the cost comes from doing the wiring harness. Would be much cheaper if it came from the factory. Research more.

Actually you misread why I was going to move to a 3/4-1 Ton. Bought my 3G 1.5 years ago. As for the 4th Gen, never buy the first year of a new platform. Have to wait 2-3 years for them to work the bugs out. In 5 years I am retiring, while I could trade in 3 years for a 4G, and would have if they didn’t kill the access cab, as it has nothing to do with the turbo gasser, is the cab configuration I don’t like. Going back to an Xtra Cab is horrible move on Toyotas part. So might as well wait the full 5 years and get my retirement truck for yanking a Travel Trailer around.

For a guy who sounds like they know it all, you’re getting a lot stuff wrong.

Have been driving Toyotas for 30+ years. The Tacoma was the first choice, but yes have looked at other options. Subaru, Ranger, Colorado, F-150-350, Silverado. The Tacoma barely won out, it was a middle of the road compromise between all those for this stage of life until the next chapter. It most likely won’t make the cut next go around.

I don't know if the 1st model year of any truck should be the same color as a brick.

I'd take a brick color over a lemon yellow color.

Research more. "as this technology could allow these converted trucks to be sold and legally operated in CARB states". Could not would. It's not US certified. Toyota would also have to make their own harness and exhaust, install it in a US spec vehicle, test it, and then get it approved. It would be expensive. A minority on forums makes it seem like everyone wants a diesel but market research proves otherwise.

And... it says "starting at $35,000". There isn't even an exhaust manifold attached to the turbo.

All I'm hearing is Toyota didn't make the truck you want when you wanted it, so they suck (cheap, lazy, etc).

Toyota's turbocharged engines have come up a few times and their history and so on, and whether they are diesel or whatever, but anyway. These are the Toyota turbocharged gas engines I can think of, and the approximate year range they were manufactured (1981-2023):

    G16E-GTS (L3, 2020-2023)
    22R-TE (L4, 1985-1987)
    3T-GTE (L4, 1982-1985)
    4T-GTE (L4, 1982-1983)
    3S-GTE (L4, 1987-2007)
    2E-TE (L4, 1986-1989)
    3E-TE (L4, 1986-1990)
    4E-FTE (L4, 1989-1990)
    8NR-FTS (L4, 2015-2023)
    8AR-FTS (L4, 2014-2023)
    S20A-FTS (L4, 2022-2023)
    T24A-FTS (L4, 2021-2023)
    M-TE (L6, 1981-1985)
    7M-GTE (L6, 1986-1992)
    1G-GTE (L6, 1985-1992)
    1JZ-GTE (L6, 1990-2006)
    2JZ-GTE (L6, 1991-2004)
    V35A-FTS (V6, 2017-2023)

So, they've made a couple, some more reliable than others I suppose.

I'm confused. Your position was EU and JP use their Tacoma's as hard as Americans. I called bull (as did others) and said you could have convinced me if you said Africa because they use their Toyotas hard. Then you tried to gaslight saying Tacos are used for grocery getters only and I called bull again. They are gas guzzlers, expensive, and not practical. Thus, my position is you need to be wealthy enough to afford the expense or poor at managing money to not realize the expense; with the exception being those who cannot afford another car in this market--respect. Then you post this weird non-sense? All because I'm calling bull on the hype around the 4 banger turbo (as did others)? Bruv, circle back when you have anything to qualify your positions.
