I know i have a Pre-runner with an open diff but I like to mess around in snow and mud and do a little offroading. Sadly I didn't get the option to choose when I got the truck but I love it and would never sell it for anything else. Does anyone know a Mechanical LSD that I can get for under $700. I just want both tires to spin but I don't want a diff locker as this is more of a street truck.

Mine came with factory LSD but one of the bearings in it went out and it had to be replaced. A used factory one was found for $300.

    Best option:

Sell or trade and get a 4X4. Don't get emotionally attached to a block of steel and rubber. You can drive off-road and in snow with far less chance of damaging your truck. If you want to "play" and spend some time drifting on slippery surfaces just stay in 4X2. It is possible to convert to 4X4, but it is costly. If you can do most of the work yourself cost will be about the same as trading. If you're paying someone to do the work, it will cost you more than just trading for a 4X4.

    2nd option:

Add a mechanical locking rear diff. That will help off road but isn't anywhere near as close to as effective as 4X4. Leave it unlocked to play.

    Cheapest option:

Learn how to drive off road with what you have. You actually have power to both rear wheels right up to the point where you lose momentum. The key is to not lose momentum. When you do then an open diff only sends power to the wheel with the least traction. An old school trick is to press in the E-brake a couple of clicks. This applies brake pressure to just the rear axle. Often this is enough to cause the rear diff to send power to the other wheel. This is exactly what traction control systems do automatically.
