Hi, I was just wondering if there is a way to check calculated mpg that shows up somewhere on 2nd gen tacomas and how to do it, thanks!

Use the calculator on your phone to divide miles driven by gallons of gas used.

Ultra gauge or scan gauge will do this but you’ll have to ensure your speed reading is accurate first.

It depends how accurate you need to be you never really can tell just how much fuel is in the tank .

If You had a 5 gallon tank and ran it till it was empty that would give you a true number.

I am sure you could find a meter to measure your fuel flow and calculate your mileage.

It comes down to how bad you need to know.

No on 2nd gen trucks there is no such thing but as @6 gearT444E said a scangauge or ultragauge has that feature among other things but you have to tell it each time you fill up to maintain accuracy.

How can you be accurate to how many gallons are still in the tank unless you drain the tank before each fill?

Maybe I might be missing something.

Not sure how the ultragauge works but my scangauge calculates fuel used in realtime based on various engine parameters, when I fill up I go till the pump shuts off and I usually give it one more click.
On the scangauge you go to fillup, it shows how much it thinks you used and you change it to how much you actually put in.
Granted this only works if you fill your tank each time but mine is never more than 0.7 gal off and if I fill up at the same pump it's almost always within 0.3 gal.

After installing my Ultra Gauge and using a GPS to correct the odometer, recalibrate the Ultra Gauge, my UG displayed MPG, versus hand calculated MPG is less than 1/2 MPG. My fuel remaining, UG display, is off about a half a gallon under almost all driving conditions (fuel tank capacity listed at 21.1 gal.)

Don't you just get the reading of what you added from the pump? That's what I do. I have an Ultragauge which seems pretty accurate for fuel conumption, but for some reason consistently off on average mpg. There's probably a way to adjust it, but I haven't tried - I put it all into a spreadsheet anyways.

My truck typically calculates .5mpg better than what I calculate with old school method. For instance, if my truck says 19.5mpg I typically have ended up getting closer to 19.0 mpg. My truck has 5k miles and I've calculated it every time this tends to be true. There have been a tank or two where the computer calculates on the money.

it knows how much fuel you use based on user input to tank size, speed driven, and other parameters it calculates such as engine load and lambda values, fuel trim, etc. key thing is you have to calibrate the speed input for it to be accurate first. You drive exactly a known distance and then tell the UG how far you went and it’ll put a scaling factor in.

    Is this conversation actually happening?

    Fill tank.
    Record Mileage.
    Drive until mostly empty.
    Fill tank.
    Record Mileage.
Get out abacus, chalk and slate.
    Preform arithmetic.

i think many folks have not truly understood the basic of Miles per gallon, where the per means divided by.

    Thank you Sir .

That explains things so I can understand . The ECM provides enough data to your scangauge to compute a mpg.

The few times i calculated the mileage it was between 10 and 14 mpg so all is good.

My best friend had to write down the odometer and how many gallons of gas he put in when he got the car to pick me up back in high school. His dad made him calculate the mileage. Good Dad. Happy Fathers Day!

Scangauge 3 gives you real-time mpg. I also use fuelly.com to track average mpg per fill up.
