Ha Ha Ha there are many things beside vehicles that keep on living because a welder / fabricator .

Because of advances of in steel manufacturing and blending alloys . Wear has been greatly reduced on equipment buckets , rock crushing equipment so not near as much hard facing is done as in my youth.

    Oh yeah for sure!

Funny you mention heavier equipment, I turned down an AG equipment repair job that could've been fun to do but that's when I wanted to retire.

Both SMAW as well as MIG working on broken tractors, backhoes, skid steers, etc.

Would've been cool as hell I bet; all the stuff used is comprised of really thick steel requiring multiple passes to patch back up together.

The rolling stand is really handy for me since I'm space constrained. 2" square tube with 1/4" sheet for mounting pads.

Looks exactly like the virtual version you posted.. very nice! ..I see you're unconcerned about the press frame with this thin stuff.. your arbor plates must still be on the plasma table. : )

Question for you guys with the JD bender.. what's your minimum offset for a tubing bend? Asked another way.. how much straight tube do you have to have before starting the bend for say a 6" radius?

I really like the Rogue Fab 605 since it's fairly easy to dial in accuracy and perform tweaks (by leaving the tube clamps attached while moving to the next bend). My only grumble is that there's a 5.25" offset required for 4.5" radius bends (and a 6" offset for 6" radius.)

    That's the goal right?

Draw it, and cut it to exact specifications!

I have over 20' of angle iron ready to be cut down to put on the brake for tighter bends but in this case, the skid benefits from those large radius bends.

I really only wanted about an inch of clearance from the lowest part of the transfer case as to not sacrifice ground clearance.

The way I have my suspension set up is, I'm not any taller than stock height but have tons of droop available instead.

And you're right, those arbor plates serve no other purpose other than to keep my 16 gauge plate nice and flat on the table! Anything thicker than that resists distortion from the heat of the plasma cutter.

I have some pieces I use for the same purpose. I cut a lot of my signs out of 18 gauge and it can be bad about warping in areas where there is a lot of cutting going on.

I have an 18" piece of 1/2" PVC pipe and an retractable magnet at my table. After I hit start when cutting 18 ga or thinner, I pick them up and I am armed for tip ups and excessive rebound/warpage. I use the pipe to hold down on the metal if I see much rebound after the tip lifts. Also, when I grab a tip up, I use the pipe to trap it against something to get it off the magnet.

Damn, you thought it through completely.

Me, I don't worry about tip ups unless -

    1. My cut path causes the torch to run back over a previously cut piece

    2. It's thin stuff like 16 gauge or 14 gauge since I don't cut anything thinner than that

If I do get a tip up, and the torch has to travel back over that area, then I pause my cut and remove that piece with needle nose pliers. Those pliers and arbor plates live at a small table next to my CNC table

Otherwise, I leave my work being cut unattended (but I'll still be in the garage working on something else)

Be curious to see a pic of your setup you described

Having forgotten that it was Father's Day, my wife's taking me out to dinner so I'm unable to work on mounting my skid

Her words being "you're not supposed to do anything today"

    So I did a 5 minute test fit -

    20230618_144904.jpg

Properly butted up to a rear mount, access to the drain plug will look like this -

    20230618_144935.jpg

Clearance will be a bit tighter than this, just ran into one tiny hiccup -

    20230618_144831.jpg

The hiccup being that, my measurements translated to my skid so well...the hardware fits perfect in the slots I created in terms of width/diameter

The issue is my measurement from the holes center to center was off by less than 1/32" which tells me I should've measured in millimeters

The difference is the threads catching on the edge of the slot in the skid

I am loving the large radius bends as it clears the front of the crossmember perfectly

Where do you think the idea came from?

They wanted to film Deliverance a few miles up the road a great many extras .

The water in the River was just to Cold .

The worst part is, I am intimately familiar with the areas in which it was filmed ... and the areas it was based on.

    It was not completely inaccurate.
