First oil change smells like gas

To answer your questions, I just added a picture of the filter and it had the same smell of gas but was not dirty like the oil. I was expecting it to be filthy but it wasn't. Not a single bit of metal or dirt in the filter. I just changed the oil yesterday and only drove it 5 miles to get the engine up to temp and to make sure I didn't have any leaks. Oil looks new and doesn't have a smell on the dipstick but I'll update as I drive more.

I am waiting on the Blackstone sample bottle so I just collected in a glass container for now. That's how I noticed the black oil. Maybe it's not needed but I'll say this, had I not done a break-in oil change and collected a sample, I very well might not have spotted this issue. Wait a minute, is that good or bad...

I'll be sure to post the results.

Thats similar back in the day when we all used dino oils. You were recommended to do an oil change the first 1k miles. Lots has changed with the use of synthetics, and cleaner running engines.

Nice. Filter looks good, although if you can actually see metal trapped in the elements there's a much bigger problem. ;)

Blackstone is the gold standard for the industry. They handle everything from autos to aviation. You'll receive a questionnaire and they take everything into account including engine age and mileage. You'll get an honest and clear report about what's going on inside. The report I received was six pages long and it included all of the results as well as associated industry tolerances. As the saying goes, it can't hurt. Very inexpensive peace of mind.

That 1st Gen Tundra I had tested was pushing a quarter-million miles and surprisingly (or maybe not) everything was still within expected tolerances for its age and mileage. Although there can be a bad apple, we've stuck with Toyota and Lexus for decades and have never been disappointed.

You're doing everything right and odds are there's nothing wrong, but as others have said, documenting it is the way to go.

Looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say!

No offence taken, i'm providing my experiences along with others and i'm not physically scoping the vehicle just playing internet mechanic presently and hey I could very well be incorrect. I'm not claiming to the perfect and it's part of why I like this trade, learning everyday and the mental challenge of it. If you're concerned there is no harm in bringing it in for a check. You have full warranty so you shouldn't have to pay for the visit. Worst case they tell you come back after break in and keep and eye on it. This is also in my opinion an opportunity to "test" your dealer as the proper thing, even if they say it's normal or come back later is they should provide you a reason why. So how they go about it can give you a glimpse into how future service visits will go.
This is very good point I forgot to mention which is also proof to back me up when I say I'm not perfect. Ahah but yes, if you had serious fuel dilution it would also be evidenced by the level on your engine oil dipstick.

Your eye cannot see the debris that will cause damage so change the filter. Also, @Bishop84 is the guy I would ask about the dark gas smelling oil at 1K miles.

1000k is a bunch of miles for a first oil change! :anonymous:

But seriously, I did my first oil change at 808 miles and the oil was nowhere near that dark. In fact it hardly looked used.

In my time, we were trained to check the dipstick, not sniff it :D Really, I didn't check the oil much during the first 1000k miles. Maybe once at 100 miles and it was clean and full so I didn't think to sniff it. I'll be checking and sniffing much more moving forward.

I concur with above post - check it every 500 miles and see it stays clear and sniffs nicely.

Same for my gen1 tundra when I it pushed well over 250k miles. I had the oil analyzed at a 100k, and again at 200k....the specs. on the sheets showed nearly no difference, and that truck is still running fine at over 300k miles. You need not be afraid of 10k oil changes with synthetics under normal driving conditions.

Note that Amsoil says acceptable fuel dilution is up to 2.4% in gasoline engines: https://blog.amsoil.com/what-is-fuel-dilution-and-why-is-it-bad/

In a 5.5 qt oil fill (176 fluid ounces,) that would be as much as 4.2 ounces of gasoline.

That's a lot of fuel. Just because there's a slight odor of gasoline in the motor oil doesn't necessarily mean there's a problem. My 70K 4.0L 1GRFE engine oil smells slightly of gasoline all the time. Compression & leak-down tests on all cylinders are normal & good. It doesn't burn a drop of oil between changes, nor does it leak/consume any coolant. Fuel economy is normal, no engine codes. I use 87 octane COSTCO gasoline, Kirkland (Costco) brand 5W-30 synthetic motor oil, and OEM oil filters with a 3-4K OCI. New filter every oil change.

Fairly normal for oil to smell like fuel.

This is way too low of mileage. Send it off to blackstone to be sure but there's no reason to be worried or to continue such short intervals.

Colour is not an indicator of oil quality. This one is dark, but is likely fine.

If an injector was leaking these trucks would flip a code quick.

Yeah, I changed mine at 1000, and it was new looking except for the metal shavings. But most importantly it didn't smell like gas

Mine always smells like gas. It is a small amount that always gets into your oil through normal engine operation. It cooks off when engine is at operating temp, hence a PCV valve. Just think about when you get some gas on your hands, you can wipe it off, but it still smell it for a long time. It is pretty pungent. You would probably smell a few drops in the 5 qts or so you drain out of you engine.

Did my first change at 3K.
The oil was black, truck runs fine .
Second change was 7430, oil looked fine. (well, not as bad)
At 10k now, and will be dropping the truck at the dealer for my freebie.

I've been doing oil changes on my vehicles for over twenty years, including the last three changes on the 3rd gen Tacoma. I have never smelled gas in the oil, even at high mileage. Either you have a sensitive nose, or you have a messed up truck as well
