There is no expertise to proofing whiskey down. It's literally dilution - just dumping in water to lower the ABV percentage.

I have to disagree, and I am the world's leading expert-level authority on what I am tasting.

Now I'm certainly not in the mood for barrel proof all the time - there are times I want something lighter or more mellow. This isn't a better/worse dichotomy.

There is a distinct and obvious difference in flavor intensity though.

    KR,

i like good whiskey. the proof really isnt important to me.

my fancy whiskey tasting young friends have given me high proof stuff that i wouldnt flush a toilet with...

at the same time they have given me low proof stuff that isnt good enough for drain pouring.

good whiskey is exactly that. a lot of it is mood to go with it.

love a glass of regular Crown Royal. been a 101 WT & Rare Breed drinker since my teens.

then again, sometimes i like a shot of Knob Creek 120.

but hey if its a cold day & im froze up? a nice glass of Disarano is wonderful & that doesnt really have any proof rating at all.

    drink what ya like. :)

A very good friend of mine from Afghan days, who got a cool award for pulling a wounded Colonel outta harms way in a Kandahar battle we were both in, bought me this here fine bottle as a going away present.

Ya see, I did what I hope others do; hire a good soldier who got out, and let him show a civilian company what a good man is capable of. Here’s to you Josh S. Let’s get into another gunfight somewhere down the road!

I hope all you dads out there had a wonderful Father's Day. I took my teenager out on her first backpacking trip and we had a great time. Got home yesterday and my girls gave me this glass. They get me, and fortunately, they love me.

Lots of talk of high vs low proofs. MY sweet spot seems to cut off around 125ish. My last bottle of Jack SBBP was around 125 proof. This bottle is just a bit higher. I think I enjoyed the 125 proof bottle a bit more. I’ll have to suffer through this one lol. As great as these are, it makes me wonder if the higher proof Coy Hill bottles are worth the cost. Cheers.

For those who can find it, what’s a reasonable price for Stagg?

When we stumble on it here in a controlled state, MSRP is like $50 or $60.

Otherwise, on secondary the best I've seen anyone do is $200ish.

I might get two for that price..
Thanks, I was hunting bourbon in Southern California and found it at two stores. One guy was very fond of his bottle and had it listed at $799. Another store had it for $249 and it got me wondering what a fair price would be in a non-controlled state.

^^^ is shipping allowed to your state?

if so? you can get it online & have it shipped to you in that $50 range.

(we cant get whiskey shipped in Ohio, but my buddys a couple miles away in WVa can get stuff shipped to them. )

What an eye opening experience to go into a nearby state’s Total Wine. Oh my Albuquerque to Denver is no comparison in selection and price! So many bourbons to choose from that I had never seen as well as some that I have but only on here or on YT channels. As for price - RR10yr was $7 cheaper, RRBS was probably over $20 cheaper! Couldn’t believe it!

One of the guys I talked to recommended Boulder Spirits Straight Bourbon Whiskey BIB Store Pick. I’ve never heard of this distillery, but he said it was a double gold winner over the last few years. 51% corn and 44% Malted Barley if I remember correctly. They couldn’t do tastes tonight, but can on THursday, so I’ll head back since I’m here for a few days. Anyone ever try this bottle before?

Also saw a bottle of Blue Note - which interests me because of the blues and guitar theme.

But I’ll head back on Thursday, don’t think I’ll be able to pass up a few bottles while I’m here.

I stopped trusting the staff there because they push just their stuff.

As far as Blue Note goes, the store picks are pretty solid. I bought the TW Colorado store pick and did not like it at first. As I started to drink through the bottle it got better but everyone else's store pick is probably $10-$15 cheaper

Thanks for the reply. I get the TW stuff recommendations. That’s how it is in my home town. Although this didn’t seem like one of those brands. It’s a store pick, but it’s not a Spirits Direct brand. The price is what I’m balking at though - $73 isn’t bad but with the high MB %, I’ll wait so I can try before a buy.

And the Blue Note bottle i think was the regular bottle. But appreciate the feedback on the store pick!

One other nice thing about this store - tons of bottles to give a try. Even had a Barrel Seagrass bottle open for a nose.

Yeah...store employees tend to push what isn't selling...there's typically a reason.

This trip’s haul. I found a Total Wine selling the EC Toasted Barrel for $54, I’ve never seen it for less than $80. I used that excuse to spend more than I should on Stagg.
