Jeeze Louise I always loved the Ford Ranchero (even the '63 in the James Bond movie "Gold Finger") My dream for a custom back then was to add a 1977 T-Bird front clip with the concealed headlamps to a 1977 Ranchero. I even started to collect some of the parts... I couldn't find an affordable 1977/'78/'79. Too bad: it was essentially a direct fit swap. My first new car was a 1977 T-Bird.

The scene with the Ranchero in Goldfinger that drives me nuts is where the crush that big Lincoln into a cube and then put it in the bed. That car probably weighed 5 thousand pounds, so that Ranchero could never handle that much payload.

It was a truck that looked like... I dunno. But as I recall: 1,000 lb payload. I'm not sure about the El-Camino, but the rear-end of the Ranchero didn't get saggy in the rear-end when you loaded it up with Scott's 4-Step and four bags of pelleted Lime in the bed. (like some other vehicles I know)

YES!!! Too funny! That cube is supposed to be a full-boat '63 Lincoln Sedan (suicide doors) with about 3 tons of Goldfinger's gold within it in the back. If you look closely, rumor has it you can see sparks flying out underneath it as it moves along to the "smelter". Hollywood license. lol The poor six-banger up front would have "gone nuclear" before it got out of the scrap yard.

The Aussies had a real love affair with Truck Cars…..Trar? Or utes downunder over there. Ranchero was the Falcon. One of my OZ buddies had one with straight 6 Barra turbo, all tarted up. Not this one but one like it. Think that blue one is a Holden (GM)

Then it gets really weird, with the RTV trim gets lifted with a locker.

Open bed is not a truck. BoF makes it a truck. Unibody makes it an SUV.

What would you call it if the bed was covered?

To the original claim of Mavericks getting near 40mpg, the Tremor is AWD v FWD. The Tremor owners on Mavericktruckclub are getting 24-26mpg mixed driving. Not exactly 40mpg. Of course a turbo Ecoboost is way more fun to drive than the hybrid!

The 60s Ford F100 must be really confused, it was both BOF and a Unibody…and what is it if the bed is covered?

    IMG_2296.jpg

We Americans really get hung up on the definition of what makes what. Other parts of the world use the word Ute for light duty utility vehicles and when they get to a certain tonnage they become trucks.

I like the word Ute over Truck, because that is what they are utility vehicles. Maybe we should just call them Pickups and drop the word Truck altogether, because that is what they are used for picking up stuff. Then it would get even more confusing…

Know the payload is fairly dismal in my Tacoma (1100 lbs), can’t pickup too much stuff… lol! So is it a chick pickup then?

Somebody around the corner from me has that same Tremor Maverick, a bunch of other nice Ford trucks, and a longbed 5lug 83 or older Toyota pick up, that is in great condition.

I think a lot of the wording has to do with how federal and state level agencies define vehicles, and it sticks with people throughout different regions. The covered bed question was aimed at the fact that you said anything with an open bed is a truck. Some states call tractor trailers trucks.

I think pickup is the best wording for Tacos, Ridgelines, Raptors, etc. Truck is too ambiguous and has different meanings. Ute is good too, until you get into NYC and people think you are calling their "utes", "youths".

    Yeah, it is all regional.

Tractor trailers are Semis or Semitruck where I am from. Of course it was called Tractor & Trailer, the “and” has been dropped over time.

Pickup is probably good for light duty, but you can “pick-up” things with about anything, open bed or not.

Ute might get you into trouble in the Southwest. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ute_people

And in some places they call heavy trucks a Lorry. That gets really weird especially if you have ever dated women named Lori, Lory, or Laurie…. Lol! :)
