Has anyone tried installing an aftermarket remote start system on their 3rd gen that works better than the stock one?

I know I have the stock one that turns on when you press lock button 3 times but my main issues with this is that it only stays on for about 10 min, and it’s dumb that the truck turns off when you open the door.

I live in SoCal, so honestly my main reason for wanting this feature is so I can leave my dog in the car with the AC on while I run in the store lol

I don’t think anyone has found a reasonable way to override the door open shutoff, I could be wrong though.

why would you need a remote start if you are leaving the truck running?
in some states you might get in trouble with the law if you leave a child or dog in an unattended car running or not

No way around letting it run longer, or not to turn off door opens. Toyota safety. No has cracked that override.

My suggestion would be to look at the systems run by law enforcement k9 teams. They have a large array of systems that can be customized and will also monitor any heat issues. I cannot think of anyone else outside of that industry. Even my viper system shuts off when opening a door. plus its important to have some sort of heat alarm if you are going to leave your dog in the truck any longer than 15 mins on a hot day.

Still shuts off when door is opened (if you don't have an H key) and has a duration timer

Thats the key (pun not intended) not the tranny type. With a physical key, it won't shut off when opening door but it requires the key put in the ignition. The push button start models all shut off when door is opened, regardless of transmission.

What I used to do was start it as normal and made sure all the doors were locked. The driver's door obviously wouldn't be and the key fob won't allow you to lock it while running. How I got around this was using the physical key to manually lock the door. It'll run as long as you like. Someone can break in and take your truck, but it'll work.

This is the only solution I thought of too lol except I have to go around and manually lock each of the 4 doors. And like you said, the major down side is it can be broken into and stolen.

    Edit: spelling

Interesting i never thought of law enforcement equipment. And yeah, I guess you’re right about the heat alarm. In my old truck I had a 1 hour runtime on the remote start and never had to worry about my truck shutting off too quickly. I never left my dog in there that long, but with this new tacoma I already know that 10 minutes isn’t enough to run into the store to buy a few things for example. I used to take her on errands with me all the time, but now she has to wait at home if I need to run errands.

If you don’t like it when the engine shuts off when you open the door, leave the window rolled down and jump in like a man.
