"New" Goodyear Territory w/ Kevlar experience

First time Tacoma owner, first time poster

My 2023 TRD Off Road came with Goodyear Wrangler Territory AT w/ Kevlar. I'm having a hard time finding any details/reviews on them. The Territory AT on Goodyear's website and elsewhere is a different tread pattern and there's not a Kevlar offering. The AT Adventure w/ Kevlar on their website looks more like what I have. I'm assuming what came on mine is an OEM model made for Toyota this year.

Can anyone out there explain the discrepancy, and more importantly, what your experience has been with the "new" Territory AT w/ Kevlar?

 

The stock Goodyear Wrangler AT w/Kevlar on my 2019 OR were fine for general use when new. At 20k, they were HALF gone and squealing when in turns. I replaced them at 25k.

22 OR with 16k miles and purchased a "road hazard" with the truck when new. Tread is past it's 1/2 life. When I said something to the dealer for the 15k service, they promptly started a refund process of the road hazard claiming "force majeure" because Goodyear tweaked the tire compound due to silica shortages related to covid and errored for safety vs wear. My alignment was slightly tweaked because of too much fun, but the alignment tech said it was not the primary contributor to the poor wear.

I've done some light off-roading with the truck and the tires have easily done anything I've asked them to do, but they definitely hydroplane at much lower speeds than when new. They did great this winter on snow and ice with about 12k on them.

I'm planning on new wheels and tires this next spring. Won't being putting Goodyear back on it.

 

Still running mine that came on 2021 OR. It's "free rubber", right? Ha! But like the other posts, they are prematurely showing age at 24.5k. They are "serviceable" I would say lengthy review. Thats' about it. Surprisingly, they don't get many flats out in the wild. Interesting - if you look around on the 'net - don't know if it's a shortage or what but the 265/70r16 (stock size) size option has pretty much disappeared online for these tires.
I'll replace mine w/ Falken Wildpeaks A/t3w 265/75r16. The Wildpeaks actually run slightly smaller than the stock Goodyears (about 10 or so more revolutions per mile), so bumping up a size (75) you aren't messing w/ speedometer and odometer quite as much w/ maybe another brand (it matters to me, as currently my speedo is dead on w/ stock tires, unlike many w/ like 2019's and earlier).

 

mine were find until I hit about 25k and they seemed to wear quickly (not sure if it was just me, I didn't actually measure). By 35k they were close to needing replaced, so I got new tires sooner than later.

 

46k on mine and they're still in decent shape. I'm anticipating replacing them in another 10-15k miles.

 

the new oem tire (22 and up) have the enhanced sidewall design

which turns the tire into a sand and mud slinging traction monster......kinda sorta
but tread is the same

 

all I know is they are 100x better than the Rugged Trails...

 

Update: Maybe mine had the "covid" formula by Goodyear which increased wear....but make note, I drive on gravel roads a lot.... just did the George Washington Quarter test on the tires . Wife (the book keeper) will not be happy - it did not pass (at 24.5k miles on them) as GW's top of head is easily viewable... meanwhile, in Feb, in the middle of KS she has a blow out (all we're ok) moving my son to Denver on her AWD 2020 Subaru Outback Touring XT. Yep Subaru, very sensitive on tire height, she had 4 new tires put on - a damn "gotcha".

 

Mine too! They sucked in the snow! Put on Wild Peaks and never looked back.

They rebranded their tires a bit. It's the exact same tire that the Tacoma TRDOR and Pros have come with since 2016, but they renamed it to Territory AT (which used to be a different tire) and made slightly beefier side walls. I plan to give them a try as my next tires this fall.

It's like this on most sources (TireRack screenshot). Tacoma OEM size (265/70r16) is gone.

 

I originally hail from 47802 (600 miles west now) Okay, that's a Falken ( and know that the Falken Wildpeaks in 265/70r16 are actually smaller size than Goodyears of the same spec. It's visually noticeable - Falkens have about 10 more revolutions per mile. I only mention it as so many complain stock size tires look and are too small - well the Falkens are even smaller! Granted, not by much.). I'm talking the specific brand and model (Goodyears)that came on my 2021 - They are Goodyears All Terrain ADVENTURE with Kevlar - those are seemingly now not available in 'tacoma' stock size. The Territory's are, but they don't say "Kevlar". This is what I see on Tire rack, searching my Tacoma and entering a IN zip code.

 

Had the dealer put some BFG KO2 in 265/75/16 on my new 2022 OR AC (which we promptly moved to my wife’s 2019 DCSB) and I gave the 4 Goodyears to the dealer. Not interested in using non-LT tires when we go in the woods.

If you’re staying on roads(paved or gravel) the OEMs on the Off-road are pretty decent and I’d say drive them until they are done before you spend money on an upgrade or replacement.

 

BC Hunter, it was a fellow Canadian to you that told me "burn that free rubber" (free, right! Ha!).. I just didn't think I'd be there at 24.5 K w/ the Goodyears. Gravel roads and/or the covid tire compound?
Anyway, I used to feel 100% your way about E rated tires and the like and no flats, etc. I hunt HARD for months.... but in the last 10 years or so standard, non LT, tires producers have really improved not getting flats and sidewall toughness. Very much so. So much so, I will not put E tires on a 3rd Gen Tacoma anymore for many reasons - it's just not designed for it IMHO - love the KO2 looks, but E rating is non starter for me - as we all know it needs as much help as it can get. Torque & HP levels on a Gen 4 - now that's a different matter.....

 

Same tires came on my '22. I rotated them last week at jist shy of 10k miles, my right rear tire, now right front, has worn down significantly in the center, and has a little more than an 1/8" less tread in the center than all three other tires. Cold tire pressure was the same as the left rear, 32psi (chalk test had my fronts at 34psi cold). Right rear is the drive tire, but I haven't been trying to do any one tire fires. I'll have the alignment checked, but otherwise I suspect a prematurely worn shock.

Based on the treadwear since new, I'll need new tires by about 25k (likely sooner, for safety with one showing so much premature wear) which sounds in line with other members here.

 

I did not enjoy them I’m my 2022 TRD off-road. I just commuted on them and they were not smooth. I switched them out for some Michelin Defender and I gained a real 1.5 or better mpg and road much better on the road. Can’t say anything about off-road as I never took the truck there. Just my experience.

 

Does anybody remember Goodyear PolyGlas tires? Those were pulled of the market shortly after it was realized that the materials in the different plies had different thermal coefficients of expansion, each material expanding by a different amount as the tire heated while driving. I learned while working with composite materials that Kevlar (Registered Trademark), frays badly when cutting with scissors and soaks up water. It's used in canoes because it is lightweight (when dry), and much cheaper than carbon fiber (stitched is stronger than woven, but woven Cf has that beauty look). That's likely why tire manufacturers place the date on the sidewall.
