Gave the thing a proper washing.

Found on valve cover bolt was broke off. Of course it's one of the lower ones, hence the oil leakage on the block depicts. I've not had good luck drilling and EZ outing these 8mm bolts... We will see.

I was happy to see it pushing out 14+/- volts at high idle. I'll call that a win.

The hydro system is going to be completely flushed. I found metal in the filter resivior. Even though one side is protected from contamination from the other side by the filter, I just can't do only the bad side. I have to inspect and flush both sides of the hydraulic system.

At this point I'm not sure what I want to dive into.

The deck will need 6hrs of fabrication to repair the cancer.

The hydro system will need 4 hours to rebuild.

I like working with both of the above.

Regardless, I'm pretty happy with the prospects of this unit. It still has good "bones". I have confidence that I can bring it back to being reliable and useful.

    Stand by...

The previous owner gave me a box full of new and used hydraulic parts and seals. I found this cylinder body with the parts. The thing is supposed to be smooth the whole length of the sides. I can only imagine what kind of contamination has occured to the whole system .

The deck is savable...it will take a day of fabrication, but I have confidence I can make it live again.

    Yes, yes it does.

I'm not even going to chance it. The entire hydro system is going to be flushed.

    Kerosene is cheap.

Until you start heating with it.
It used to be pretty reasonable, last year it was around $5.50/gallon.

Yeah, they were blowing out heaters last year & nobody was buying. Fuel price was way out of line.

I guess I should clarify. Both gasoline and kerosene are cheap, but kerosene has a much higher vapor pressure. It won't ignite by looking at it crosswise. The system has to be flushed, I just don't want to burn the place down .

Our primary heat is coal, carried in a pail at a time -- for 30 years. Did some quick math, that is about 6000 pails. :bananadead:

We have always used kerosene in the milder weather, last year was the first time ever that electric was cheaper to heat than kerosene.
Don't worry though, the electric rates went up late winter... :annoyed:

I agree, I clean many things with kerosene.
The parts washer has had the same kerosene in it for probably 20 years or more.

I yanked two trees out of the woods last week that fell down during the winter. Excited to add some maple to the firewood stash... That stuff seems to burn hotter than anything else that grows on my property.

    I’m back to repairing my Ferris IS1000Z. It’s an ‘06 model, 23hp Kawasaki FH680v-AS30.

Runs like a top still, but even after replacing the upper crank seal and breather gasket it’s still puking oil, albeit slower than before. Can’t tell where it’s coming from, flywheel slings it all over.

I’ve read of these motors having issues with the upper crankshaft bushing going bad and causing the crank to wobble a bit, making even a new oil seal leak. Going to replace breather components, new breather, new gasket, new cover. RTV on mating surfaces and see if that stops it.

It’s got a new gasket and RTV in it now, but maybe the cover is a touch warped. If that doesn’t fix it, I hear that I can order a lower crank bushing and press it into the upper housing. Apparently Kawi doesn’t sell the upper bushing separately.

Good news is it only takes me ten minutes to strip it from running to the following pic. This is getting old but I’m not one to give up on the mower. Might look into a used Intek or something to slap on it while I figure this out. Not sure what my options are…

Let me know what you find. I have 460v that is pushing oil into the intake. Not sure if it's similar to what you got going on.

I’ve read about that issue as well. Lots of guys seem to be replacing the breather under that cover, new gasket and cover. Also see people removing the sponge that’s in there.

I’ll keep updating as I get time.

edit: it’s amazing what people on FB Marketplace want for any 20hp+ vertical no matter what brand…

Must have been some hella shrapnel in this system.

    upload_2023-6-24_16-0-11.png

I found this washer in the wrong place. Previous owner had it on the top of the spring.

    upload_2023-6-24_16-1-19.png

One of the pistons was stuck down. No wonder it could make no power.

Much easier to flush and clean things while parts are on the bench.

Will have to replace this plate. I can readily feel the grooves worn in the plate.

True dat, that's why I look for broken riding mowers lol. You get a FBM discount for dragging away a whole mower vs. the weight value of gold with a stand alone motor...

Been April since I was here last.
Dragged this into my garage in January:
    PXL_20230120_181541575.jpg
    PXL_20230120_181547514.jpg

Just rolled it out last week finally after just not feeling it. Normally I am excited to start and finish a project, but this one I just wanted done and gone. This one just lingered and hung around.

Ended up having to swap motor
    swap Carb
    rewire
    new battery
    sand
    rust reform
    paint
make missing side panels and battery box cover
reweld and grind axles due to water damage
    Belts
    pulley
    clutch stuff
    everything else essentially
    PXL_20230619_231758638.jpg

I let my kid paint it hence all the primary colors lol.
