For knives that I carry (and thus will inevitably use, abuse and lose) I really like Kershaw Guy
    https://kershawguy.com/
His prices on factory seconds are impossible to beat and often the defect is undetectable to me

ETA: For you kids first knife that you want them to keep and remember you buy get a non china Spyderco, Buck or Gerber from bladehq

    I'll check out BladeHQ

Syderco was the first thing that came to mind for the boys. Ive got two, one is in my mix of benchmades, and the other is safe in a box somewhere. I've been moving more than I would prefer as of late.

I'll check out microtech. Ive heard good things about them, but not sure they are the style I'm looking for.

    Thanks Fellas

Good to know. I like my ravencrest knife but it was on clearance and didn't cost much.

also will add in my input for brands,

I'm a huge slut for Benchmades but will break the bank.. a solid brand for gifting is CRKT smaller company based out of OR, affordable and while the kids may not care your FIL may appreciate getting something that is nice quality but not a huge name brand..... or not just my 2cents:D

Stuff that costs more than my wife thinks.
Team Gerber/Kershaw over here, and I tend to just find one I like and look it up in a few place to grab it for the best price I locate it at (online).

But that's mostly because mine get beat up and usually end up "lost" with a camping buddy every few years so I have an excuse to get a new one.

How old are your boys? I think every young man should start with the quintessential Swiss army knife. Tweezers, toothpick, scissors, saw and knife. Keep it simple. Or for a little more get the SAK Ranger. Nobody needs 30 different tools at once. Get a small one. This helps to instill an "edc" mindset. Keep it in the pocket, no clips to catch it on and lose it. I have 2 ravencrest, will never buy again. Horrible build quality. If you want something quality but still on the cost friendly side. Benchmade bugout for a flipper. If you wanna get fancy, microtec, Benchmade, spiderco, etc are all great options. Grew up with a SAK in my pocket, then a buck 110 and first hunting knife was a buck 119. Can't go wrong with a buck. Just never pry anything. Crkt are great knives as well. I haven't bought anything other than custom fixed blades in years now so hard for me to say anything more.

My boys are 10 and 12. We just relocated to North Central Washington to take care of the wife's family.

As an Eagle Scout, I always hated Swiss army knives. Even the small ones are bulky and not having a clip, they fall out of the pocket. Sure, the once and a while time you need something on it is nice, but 99% of the time, I find a simple blade to do the trick. Use a sharp blade to pull splinters, or just about anything can be a toothpick. I was looking at the Benchmade Bugouts as they come in a variety of colors. The US made Spydercos look nice too both with blades around three inches. I think the ~$100 mark is where I'd like to stay around. The knives I'm seeing are quality and should last them a lifetime, but not ridiculously priced if something happens. I know I don't have my first knife anymore, but I still remember all the cool shit I did with it.

Agreed, setup my daughters with their own single, effective, sharp blade. No need for all the other stuff. Give them a EDC toolkit for their cars, teach them about some simple things and call it a day. Now, my youngest out shoots me at the range. Tried to influence her with a rental P238 stainless/rosewood (super pretty) but she bought herself a P229 pro. Young eyes and all that....

This type of post truly makes the BS thread worthy - seasonings for the win!

I'm a sidekick fan, have them in each vehicle. Since I now carry a tool roll (Father's Day gift - jab at you early vasectomy folks - granted, you have more to spend on mods) in my tacoma, I appreciate the Husky adjustable pliers with an almost parallel grip. My sidekick bungled up my old Coleman white gas two burner fuel supply nut due to it's pliers style opening. I'll call an audible on a good blade and adjustable pliers and a phillips screw driver. I just won't carry them in my pocket ;o)
