All filter material as they get dirty (plug up) will trap more & smaller debris. Now, the air/fuel ratio will be less air flow.

I'm sorry, that is incorrect. A dirty air filter has exactly zero impact on the air/fuel ratio.

Problem with K&N filters is, some come with excessive oiling, they will foul your trucks MAF sensor. I had to clean mine in the tundra several times till enough dirt covered that air cleaner fabric. They really made no difference in performance till I did a dual flowmaster exhaust system including using their flowmaster cats.

I am well aware of the impact of over oiling the K&N filters on the MAF. Just don't be a douche nozzle and over oil them and you will be fine. The one in my FJ has almost 200K miles of air through it with zero issues with the MAF / engine. But like with anything in life, your mileage may vary!

    Carry on!

I understand over oiling after you wash the filter out once it hits 50k miles, but this was a brand new in the box filter that kept setting the ecl off. I kept finding a flim of oil inside the MAF sensor that needed to be washed out.

If there is an oil residue down stream of the filter, the filter had too much oil applied. Could be from the maker or owner.

I have a Volant "Drytech" cone filter. Volant's instructions say the filter is good if you can see the wire mesh. I'm at 27k miles and can still see the wire mesh through the clear air box lid.

Check it every few months while I have the hood up. Makes sense since I'm already there and takes 10-15 seconds.

probably change every 10-12k and replace the cabin filter same time

Thanks for sharing, I noticed my truck would engine brake more with (in my case) the foam pre-filtered ACDelco but I didn't think it would affect performance like that. I guess thats the kinda thing you'll mostly notice under load when the engine wants all the air it can swallow. I guess it comes down to filtration vs efficiency

    https://www.bing.com/search?pc=CBHS...&q=does+a+dirty+air+filter+affect+gas+mileage

    Yes
    According to 8 sources
Yes, a dirty or clogged engine air filter can affect gas mileage by reducing the airflow to the engine, which can cause the engine to work harder and use more fuel to maintain performance.
Does Air Filter Affect Gas M…
    harristirecompany.com
If the air filter is dirty, it passes less air into the engine. That is not a good thing. It can impact your gas mileage – by as much as 10 % – and it will also affect engine performance.

Just to be clear as they're both being interchanged. A dirty air filter will negatively impact fuel economy. It does not change the air fuel ratio. Just chokes the engine essentially. It'll still use the same air fuel ratios based on throttle input, load, etc

Once again, incorrect. Read the exhaustive study by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (I posted the link above); you will discover fuel economy will not be negatively impacted unless you drive a vehicle with an old-school carburetor.

I've found 10-15k is usually acceptable for the conditions I drive in. Also lines up w/ the blackstone results I've received on oil w/ about 10k miles and state filtration seemed good.

At least the argument isn’t “what brand of oil used on the filter?”

Where are y'all getting engine air filters? Walmart (Fram) and a couple of local parts houses have none. What is a good website for oem filters? ....maybe I just need to go to dealer.
