The throwaway car..soon as it needed anything more than routine stuff, throw it away.

Not as odd as you might think, oddly. The wipers were still not a standard thing in those years, and as you said some went more with the go versus show aspect. It's possible it had a better stereo and it croaked so someone just swapped that one in for the stock look..those AM Delco's are a dime a dozen.

The lack of intermittent wipers is not that surprising; I think it's weird that somebody spent the extra money for power windows, a power seat, and a tilt steering column, but didn't get air-conditioning. You make a very good point about the radio. If you look closely, you will see that it is digital. By comparison, the '82 Camaro Berlinetta that I saw at the car show in Fleetwood had a factory AM/FM cassette with analog tuning. The radio in the Berlinetta was a Motorola rather than a Delco, but it was still factory-installed...

The late 70's and early 80's found two words combined that should never be used together: Computer & carburetor.

The Gov't was big into designing cars from the early 70's on, they were forcing regulations on the auto manufacturers that were nearly impossible for them to comply with, the technology just wasn't there yet. Every manufacturer had driveability issues at this point.

All the manufacturers had to work with were vacuum switches and relays.

By the early 80's all manufacturers had a giant snarl of plumbing and other stuff under the hood. Some of that stuff probably didn't work properly 6 months after the car was built, the dealerships didn't have the special tools required and the mechanics of the day didn't understand how to fix it.

Fuel injection really cleaned up and simplified under the hood, the cars ran better.
