Holy cow, you can get a 12qt box of oil at Walmart now for $40 and they even have Toyota filters if you want the OEM. Fram just came out with Synthetic Endurance exclusively for Walmart, exact same specs as TRD filter for $12.

Yeah, I guess they figure if you can afford a tacoma, you can afford their oil changes. Btw, I didn't buy my tacoma from them either...toyota arranged my toyotacare to see them.

Good to know Ya can get them at Walmart. The dealer have a good deal on the oil filter but I have people trying to buy my truck when I go there.

Hello Everyone, I will be performing my first oil change, but the TRD filter I received has what I think is resin that's run down covering some holes. Is it safe using a filter in this condition?

LED interior, license plate, and fog lights. More to come.
After working as a dealer tech for 10 years I saw too many mangled skid plates and missing, stripped, or incorrect bolts in them from having other people do the oil changes. I've even seen a couple of "horror story" posts here so I do it myself. My wife's Civic went to the dealer for oil changes for the first 2 years, when I went under there to do one at home there was hardware missing from the splash pan you have to remove. Those are reasons why I spend the $40 to do it myself.

I had the same thing in my Royal Purple and Amsoil version of the TRD filter. Installed it anyways, then when I did my oil change at 5k, the resin was still there. So I don't think it will break down and end up in the engine.

Its fine, if you trust your dealer.

I did so on my last two Toyota's, didn't have a single issue, even purchased the extended service plan for the Wife's highlander so they did oil changes and tires for another two years. That isn't always the case though (ask the guy who was missing his filter entirely).

Just received another TRD filter in mail today & it's same way with a bit more resin, so maybe it's normal IDK as I'm new to this. Thanks!

I also did one "free" oil change at my local Toyota dealer. They stripped a couple of the skid plate bolts... Also left off the small O-ring....

Ask them for new bolts, you will get the whole skid mount kit, with spacers, mounting bolts and oil door bolts. My dealer had ordered the kit after they lost the oil door bolt.

I had a message on my phone about scheduling my next free service. I will let them rotate the tires, but will change oil myself.

Unfortunately its longer to drive to those stores listed than the ride to our recycling ctr.

While bringing up rotating tires... I once bought a set of tires from a local tire shop which must have been balanced, and mounted by helen keller. When the next rotation was due, I decided to rotate them myself. I had to use my 3/4'' 4 ft breaker bar while jumping on the end of it to break loose the lug nuts. I couldn't believe I didn't snap off any studs.

Just did my first break-in oil change after 1k miles and to my surprise, factory didn't use the small O-Ring. Kinda makes you wonder...

Maybe you missed it falling into your oil container when you removed that drain cap. It happened to me on my first oil change last fall.

I'm more concerned about the filter's cheese grater center tube, when there's a center tube in the filter cap already. If you're "lucky" the holes on the two tubes will occlude each other, then all the oil will flow through the bypass valve.

Of course there's no way to tell if this condition is happening. The engine will run fine in the short term on the effectively unfiltered oil.

Agreed! As you get older, stuff like this is not worth getting all twisted up over. But then again, TW is the home of over thinking so....

    Carry on!

Considering toyota developed the oil filter housing and the trd filter, Ima go ahead and say, it will be fine. Ski
