I hated making this post, but here’s another “weird sound” issue. I have a ‘22 MT with 10K. About once a week, I will hear a short sound burst when reving to about 3K RPM before I shift. Only lasts about 1/2 a second and it’s not repeatable. Totally random.

Hard to explain, but it almost sounds like a very high pitched engine rev.

This is going to be a really dumb question.

are you just occasionally not lifting your foot all the way off the gas before depressing the clutch?

Nothing. The sound is elusive. I was able to get it to semi-reproduce today by bumping the throttle into higher revs right after I heard it. But I only slightly heard it one additional time. No freaking clue.

I wish it we’re... but it happens when I am fully in gear.

Could be the A/C compressor whine, look it up and see if it sounds similar.

Nah, I am well acquainted with that noise. It drives me up the wall. And from what I’ve read, it’s not the compressor, it is the expansion valve.

I wish it wasn’t summer. I’d try to see if the sound would happen if AC is disabled.

I think I have halfway figured this out. The sound I am hearing is almost like a rattle. I think it’s the same rattle sound when your RPMs are too low for the gear that you’re trying to take off in. Whatever makes that bog down, rattle sound, I think it’s causing the sound I am hearing randomly. What that is? I have no idea. Or why it happens when I’m fully in gear. I’ve driven manuals before, but it’s taking me a long time to get used to this transmission. The truck babies you too much.

I experienced the same thing you are. Near as I can tell it's the heat shield rattling but it has gotten better, or I have gotten better at shifting around it, over my 4k miles. I have been driving manuals for nearly 50 years and this one is a bit wonky and has taken some time to acclimate. I haven't deleted or bypassed the clutch accumulator but many swear that the experience with it out or bypassed is the way to go. I have found that slowing the shifting down and matching revs has made a big difference and keeping the throttle light below 2K has mostly eliminated the sound.

Good to hear someone else hears it.

The accumulator delete is my next mod FOR SURE. I hate this clutch with a fiery passion.

And I agree with you. I’ve had to drastically slow down shifting. I have to rev match going into 2nd and 5th. Sometimes 6th. Also, 5th gear imo is a useless gear. It’s so short. I’m either in 4th or shifting straight from 4th to 6th on the interstate.

You have to rev match going into 2nd and 5th? Please explain.

I know, I feel like a child driving this truck.

I can never get the shift into 2nd exactly right and fast enough. I always have to sacrifice. If I go quickly into 2nd, it feels like I have to jam it in and it never just “sucks in” to gear. It’s a “grainy” shift. I always have to wait for the syncros to accept the shift and usually I end up rev matching to compensate for the drop in RPMs.

5th isn’t as bad, but no matter how much I baby the clutch, I always get a slight bump/jerk when letting out in 5th which blows my mind considering the speed/RPMs. So again, I bump the throttle ever so slightly.

Glad I’m not the only one who has to do this. I couldn’t have articulated it better myself

I’ve heard some tip-in spark knock at times. Could that be what you’re hearing?

Hmm i think it’s the accumulator. I had something similar letting out the clutch in 5th with the accumulator, it was happening half of the time though. Also, clutch shuddered when letting off the clutch in first up steep hills. But my biggest complaint with the accumulator was that for the life of me I couldn’t revmatch quickly and smoothly like I could on my previous pick up without the accumulator.

For a bit there I seriously thought I forgot how to drive a manual, haha. Thanks to TW, I learned about the accumulator and decided to remove it, and boy I’m glad I did. I have no more issues with the clutch, no shuddering/jerking and perfect revmatching 90% of the time.:)

Man you have no idea. I felt like a first time driver looking up YouTube videos of people shifting in the Tacoma.

I wish Toyota would have made it a dealer add-on.

    Haha!

Did you know 4 gens do no come with the accumulator, even though there is more TQ/HP.

IMHO it’s an absolutely useless part that makes driving harder for experienced MT drivers, I also believe it contributes to wearing out the clutch quicker.

I heard that in mine a few times but it really sounds like a metallic clinking (heat shield?) It’s very short and only happens right after I release the clutch and apply throttle.

I would be shocked if my engine pings on 94E0 haha.
