XtraCab / No Rear Doors

Toyota says they listened to customer feedback. “Many said they wanted to be able to their truck in a garage. So we kept overall dimensions the same.” For sure. At 212” length the current gen AC LB fits in my garage with about a foot to spare. A DC LB is literally bumping against the wall. How do I get to my beer refrigerator on the other side of the garage? to say nothing of parking lightly to avoid bumper and wall damage.

A DC short bed does fit in the garage, but does not allow me to have a 6 foot cot in the back for camping. “To fit in my garage”. I want what I currently have. I guess the current situation is fine because any excitement I had for the new Tacoma is totally gone.

 

There's nobody at Toyota who gives a shit if the Tacoma can fit in your garage. The new trucks have fit on the slow boat from Mexico the same as the old trucks did. If they didn't Toyota would be charging even more for the new trucks.

 

Designing with customer feedback doesn’t mean complying with every individual customer’s desires. Product management and development is way more complex than that

On the manufacturing end, why no 4x4 version of the sport or off-road versions of the new (and improved!) "extended cab"?
Why restrict that option only to SR, SR5, and PreRunner? Yeah. Sales numbers. Seat deletions.

 

Was Toyota listening to Cardi B? Yes that's what he said, It's an added benefit that the truck will fit in a garage. The appeal of the Tacoma is it's size.

I'm wondering if the Xtra Cab can accommodate 4x4? I can't see why it can't, even if the coil spring rear has to go on the XC.

 

Also why does the Xtra Cab have no coils. I actually prefer leaf but no coils seems like Toyota are being cheap with their extended cab heritage truck.

Still seems like an odd decision after having clamshell doors for 23 years, that is if you include the 1st Gen Tundra, which the 2nd and 3rd Gen Tacoma became.

At least there are still some options out there for us freaks of nature who like access doors.

We should just think of the xtra cab as a regular cab with a bit more behind the seat storage. Then the AC club can bitch about the demise of the access cab, and turn around and drool over a new regular cab.

 

Half this board already laments that there isn’t a regular cab anymore, so that makes good sense to me

 

Maybe if they did an 8’ bed. Think the HiLux is 7.5’. Sure do like the extra space behind the seats. Had regular cabs in the past, there is a reason haven’t bought another. Only one I liked was the 2nd Gen Tundra because of that extra space. Really wanted one of those over the Tacoma for the 8’ bed plus cab space, unfortunately they discontinued that too.






Packing for an impromptu camping trip this weekend, long story short need to go recover some bikes out of the mountains. Love my Taco for running around town…gets tight in there traveling though, think I need a bigger truck. Sure glad I didn’t buy a Subaru Outback, this Tacoma is barely enough at times.

 

I’m one of those 90% poser and 10% user. DCSB OR. Use my 4x4 more times just spinning the gears to keep them lubed than actual need. Back seat carries dogs and groceries. Dog groceries too. On rare occasions the grandkids. The bed gets used for Home Depot runs and occasional neighbor duties. The AC is by far the best looking configuration. It would be the best configuration for me and is what I *should* have bought 5 years ago.

But now that I’m okay with the 2024 power numbers, there’s no reason for me to buy the ‘last of’ the 3rd gen because I’m afraid of what the next gen will be. 6 months ago I was seriously looking for an AC Off-road in lunar with the right tech spec. Glad I didn’t find it. If I had, I would have bought it and would likely drive it for my usual 10 years. Now, I’m 5+ years into that 10 and could trade in good conscience in 2+. If they had kept a true AC for 4th gen, I probably would. As it is, I won’t trade until I have a need for that power (travel trailer). I do wish they had kept the true AC.

 

About the same, really could use a full-size 8’ bed 10% of the time, the rest of the time commuting and running around. Why I am in a Tacoma for the next 5 years. Damn glad I didn’t get Subaru Outback, would be great for running around, camping would been awful, was thinking the gas mileage would be better than the Tacoma, it isn’t much if at all. My buddy who has the exact same trailer as me, he gets 19…and mine will do 18.5.

The answer is for me to get a 6X12 enclosed trailer to get some stuff out of the bed, but the carport where I would park it needs the roof raised. That is next years project when I redo our house roof. So I’ll just bitch in the mean time.

 

Great thread. I've been driving Toyotas for over 34 years and have bought 3 trucks. A 90 Xtra cab, 99 Xtra cab and an 09 AC.

I think the interior/exterior aesthetics of the 3rd gen are the best since the Tacoma was released. Now the 4th gen is coming out with many different features and monikers. Dropping the AC and going back to the Xtra cab makes it very easy for me to keep driving my 09. It is fitted out for the way I use it. The only problem is the crap metal core support on my 09. With the 4th gen coming out and no access cab I'll be anxiously awaiting the new Stout and Subaru Brat. While they aren't midsize, these additions to the truck market are exciting. Can't wait to see how people start using them. Toyota is going to lose Tacoma customers by axing the Access Cab. I can't believe I'm saying this but I might even consider a Ford in the future or wait for the 5th gen.

 

The hard truth is: Toyota is cheap. They also don't care. They are used to Tacoma selling itself.
Don't marry yourself to a brand and you'll be fine when it's time to bail.

 

They don’t, owned my 1st Gen for 21 years, racked up 435,000 miles, they didn’t even give me a t-shirt. They were certainly happy to take my money for a new one.

We Toyota owners tend to be fanatical, and not sure why.

Mine was almost halfway there. We still have it, the new engine was supposed to be done last week. Haven’t heard anything yet. Don’t think I’ll live long enough to see it to a million.
