    On gravel?
We juuust melted out to 8500 a couple days ago. Someone said some trails were good as high as 9100, but I'm assuming sun-exposed.

This is Colorado. Yes gravel, the whole way was melted and dry. That’s not to say the top where they had to plow the road still had 6’ walls on both sides.

Yeah I was going to say the original Protein Powder color is a pretty good match for the Lunar Rock. Not sure how it compares to the new color you posted.

How on earth do you still have OEM tires? I swear those things vaporize on the first ride based on my experience at least

The dual compound maxxis are actually pretty damn solid in my experience. Just not that grippy..

    speaking of tires...

I put on continental kryptotal Re on my bike.....enduro casing, soft compound. holy shit was that difficult to get on there. the bead is SOOOOO tough and the sidewall SO rigid that it took two of us working the tire to get it to get on the rim. jeez. and...i knicked the rim tape. so i took the whole thing apart to put on new rim tape. :/ and then had to go do all that again and it took two of us...again.

haha! yeah...my friend did the DH casing..his was even worse.

works better for inserts i think? but you can take a blow dryer to the tire to warm it up. my friend with the dh casing stuck it in the sun for a little bit to soften it up

Rode an optional double black tech line today. Fully chunk and rocks of about 140 feet in .1 of a mile. Walked up to it. Said okay there’s grip. Set my rocks for my line. Mentally set my speed check zones. Rode it out. Great feeling.

the video just did not do it justice because we have no fucking clue how to use a camera and do angles and whatnot. But damn do I love Tahoe

Camped the night and got 2 rides in. 23 miles and 3400 feet of climbing. Continuing to build those legs and lungs. Although for trail climbs we’ve made a bad habit of taking breaks a sessioning a spot or re trying a climb spot to help catch breath and rest the legs

I usually let them melt a little in the Utah sun and lube the rim. Helps a ton.

Question for you all if you can help me here.

My wife rides a Rockhopper out with me and has progressed pretty well since the fall, going faster on trails, getting up punchy climbs, and starting to roll some tech spots. The rockhopper has 27.5 Specialized Fast Track Control T5 tires, something that works well for a lot of areas I would think. I set them up tubeless and usually have her at 19/21 on air pressure. The last few rides, she’s been saying she feels the tires starting to break loose when she is in corners - and our trails are kind of kitty litter stuff on hard ground, sand and the occasional rock features.

I run a purgatory/butcher combo on my Stumpy and thought about doing the same for her since I like them for the areas I ride and thought the extra tread would help her as she continues to progress.

Is this thinking sound, or am I off. Maybe I’m over thinking it as well, but just wanted to ask the peeps that know more about this stuff than me.

    Thanks again for the help.

I don’t know that much abt setup but simple thought says if they work for you, get them for her. But hardtails would also be more likely to lose traction in the rear than a full sus if wheels start hoppin

Take her up step in knobs to like dual purgatory. If she wants more after that then go for the butcher.

I like the Eliminators, and have used an Eliminator/Ground Control setup in the past. There seems to be two different versions of the purgatory out right now, with some very different tread designs.

Might be worth riding behind her and watching how shes cornering, leaning too much with the bike will cause wash outs.

Thanks for the replies so far. @Dr. Doom Says haha. Yeah, i try to let her lead and she refuses, saying it puts pressure on her to ride faster. But maybe that’s the approach, tell her I need to watch and see if it’s the tires or if she’s leaning incorrectly. I’ll give that a try.

    Thanks again!

Yea I was speaking of the new ones that look like a more modern trail tire.(left) The old ones are kinda funky.

While we're on tires...I've been thinking about a change up not that summer is kicking in. I'm riding an Evil Following. Currently on a DHF front and Dissector rear combo. I'd like to change things up and maybe lean towards trail speed as the longer alpine stuff starts to open.

The two combos I'm thinking about are Dissector front with Rekon rear (stock config for Spur and Ranger) or keep the Dissector out back and go DHR2 front (stock config for Ripley). I've read the DHR2 is faster rolling than the DHF. Bonus to DHR2 route would be if I'm going somewhere more rowdy or for the wetter season I can shift the DHR2 to back and throw the DHF maxxgrip back up front.

I also see that Maxxis is showing the Forekaster as redesigned in '22 and faster rolling than the Dissector. So not sure how that could potentially factor in. I'd prefer to keep the Dissector in the lineup just so I'm not having to replace 2 tires. Also why I'd prefer to stay with Maxxis, but I'd consider other options too.

LOL. I have your exact configuration. followign with dhf/dissector. I recently put the dissector on after my aggressor got pretty low tread.

I'm all for high traction on the front, especially for the summer dust conditions we get around here. So I would keep the DHF on the front and call it good. If not the DHF, Assegai. But then you're getting some extreme traction and rolling resistance with that.

as for the rear, i have been enjoying the dissector. Seems I can really dig into the berms with the dissector. Maybe goign with the rekon in the rear woudl be a good idea for pedalling efficiency but you would skid more in the rear. Which you might prefer.

but what do i know? i'm just a dude on the internet.
