if they're rebuilding OEM assemblies they might be OK
but they are probably busing cheap replacement assemblies and that would be very detrimental to your nighttime driving experience

Yeah thats my concern just to be able to change the color of my DRL's. I don't want all the crazy shit I would just like to switch between amber and white on occasion if I want to.

I always have thought changing headlights might be/cause an issue. I was having an oil change at a service facility and while waiting a tech came out to another person who had changed their headlight, they FAILED inspection because not DOT certified. So buyer beware.

Those appear to be chineseium eBay headlights modified with color changing LED strips. (Either modified by a 3rd party or at the same gulag that made the headlights.) At that price point expect the same poor-quality optics as the "normal" chineseium eBay headlights.

If you want good quality light pattern and the ability to change between white and amber DRLs, get the Morimoto XB. Beware the failure rate is higher than OEM.

Thank you for the input. I will definitely look into the Morimoto XB.

Second vote for @no vtec 4me He has done a couple sets for me, and does great work. As to what LED boards to use, that I’m not sure. I know @Diode Dynamics makes a great board, but I don’t know that the switchback version can be run in bright amber constantly? I believe they over drive the amber for turn signals, so it would affect its lifespan for sure if that’s the case.

I run the DD amber constantly with zero issues they are super bright and actually match the color better than the pic shows. I have the drl as well as the other amber wired to flash brighter with turn signal. These are not the switchbacks though. Decided to do this while I was doing the headlight black out.

These are my factory lights. The amber strip, halo and DRL are all diode dynamics that I added when painting the chrome housings black.

fyi, there's no such thing as DOT-certified.

DOT laid out the specifications of FMVSS 108, but it's up to individual governing bodies for compliance, and self-certification by any production facilities.

Whatever you say, I have noticed a raised DOT on lights but I am not an expert, just reporting what I heard. “Self-certification”. Lol. Is like a fox in the hen house. I’d trust that.

Recently added smoke tail lights and sidemirror blinkers.
Went smoked to better match OEM headlights. New/good headlights are too expensive for me to replace, just because. I vaguely looked at the assembly to see if it comes apart. Good to know.
Did painting the chrome black noticeably change the brightness? I have some matte black vinyl I wanted to use instead of paint.
Going to use a clear amber film on fog lights.

i used to be the moderator at hidplanet. i had started reading heavily into the certification processes for all the led mods i was making to the car at the time, as i could follow fmvss108 to the letter for output characteristics, but alteration from the specified tested bulb type makes the housing illegal for road use(next to that "DOT" spot on the light, it specifies the bulb used/certified in testing).

TLDR; OEM's wrote themselves into the process to allow themselves to self-certify assemblies they make--that is who stamps the "DOT" logo on the housing, indicating the OEM is compliant with the rules. but you or i cannot ever certify any housing. technically just changing the bulbs from 1 type to another makes the entire housing require complete recertification(environmental and output) by an outside company that was $10,000 minimum 10 years ago.

it's another great example of companies writing the rules, which basically eliminates small-guy competition, despite clear-cut rules for entry.
