I need to replace shocks and struts. I have a 4x4, manual, TRD. Any recommendations on what brand, model and I was quoted $1050. Does that seem high?
    Thanks!

There are plenty of step by step tutorials here on TW as well as how to, YouTube videos. Save yourself the $1000 bucks and DIY it.

It really depends on what they're selling you, many shops will use an aftermarket solution like Monroe Quick Struts which I guess aren't very good and have a reputation for leaking in a very short time. If a shop is giving you OEM shocks and springs for $1050 I'd jump on it myself! :p

It also depends if you want to go stock or get some lift, Bilstien 4600's are the most popular choice for stock height shocks.

Being in the market myself, see the thread mentioned by Bivouac, right now I'm vetting a company selling assembled coilovers with Bilstein shocks and Moog coils, everyone seems reluctant with this company but their price can't be beat for that package, around $725 with coupon and free shipping. Expect to fork out at least $800-$1500 for good shocks and coils, which is why $1050 makes me a bit suspicious.

Post some pics of your truck. Does it have a stock suspension. If you're looking to keep it stock go with Bilstein 4600 shocks. You could even google Bilstein 4600 shocks for 2004 Tacoma 4x4 and find several good links and videos. Skies the limit or maybe your budget.

I ended getting a bid for Bilstein 4600s for my 04 tacoma for $1500. Does anyone have a recommendation for a comparable shock like a Rancho that may be just a bit less expensive? Thanks!

Are you saying that's a quote to buy and install 4 shocks. No way dude, that's highway robbery. you can get 4 of these shocks from Amazon, just as an example
    https://www.amazon.com/Bilstein-Abs...cint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584070153140187

so charging you over 1k for installation is just nuts. Ask for some help here on TW in your area. members are always willing to help out a Newbie if you have limited mechanical skills. that quote is waaayyyy to high.

I will ask if anyone knows of a garage in Denver that works on older Tacomas. I would love to find one. Yes, I am not mechanically inclined and live in condos, etc. That is $250 labor per wheel. Thank you for your input.

If that's $250 labor per wheel, then it's $1000 for parts that should only run about $400 (give or take). Don't pay that bizarre markup

Even $250 per wheel is highway robbery for labor too. A good mechanic could do both shocks in an hour. I could see 2 hours labor being fair if they had to assemble the coilovers themselves. But $250 per hour of labor would be way too high.

I am about to have a garage put Bilstein 4600s on my 04 tacoma, 4x4, trd, manual, 6 cyl 3.4 and have been reading where the original bilsteins were not actually bilstein 4600s. My question is if 4600s will fit my truck and are a good shock/strut, right? I have no lift just a slightly bigger tire LT265/75/R16. I am also not replacing the front coil springs right now for money reasons. This work is $1500. I got 2 other bids - one $1600 for Bilstein 4660s and $1500 for Monroes. Any input helps - thanks in advance.

I'm sorry, I'm confused. 4600s vs 4660s. Have a link to these 4660s that the shop is quoting you $100 more for?

You're going to be fine with 4600s. The difference was a small delta in shock body diameter. You'd never be able to tell the difference behind the wheel. You're going to be happy with the 4600s over the Monroe garbage.

    I meant 4600s. 4660 was a typo.
