Try flooring it up to speed and see if there's any point in the RPM range where it produces either a flashing check engine light or just plain won't accelerate past. If this is the case, you may have a catalytic converter issue.

    Only a thought.
Ethanol in fuel will absorb water, gasoline floats on top of water. Ethanol disolves in gasoline, untill it reaches a point of water saturation that it falls out sinks to the bottom and no longer is dissolved in gas.

When you drive it mixes and sloshes and is picked up by the fuel pump, then it settles back down.

Not saying this is your problem, just a data point to think on.

Fuel stations sometimes leak water into the tanks as well. Gas cans left unsealed are a prime culprit.

We have over 200 small gasoline engines at work. This is a constant issue we deal with.

I'm not sure if you even have an OBDII port considering those weren't standard until 1996. If you do, try and have the codes read. It's possible your light would be on but someone removed the light bulb or burned out the bulb.

    Welcome to the forum!!

Sounds almost like a intermittent open circuit in the ground system .

Might be in the ignition Circuit . EFI circuit or the ECM.

Is it completely random not affected by weather like after a monsoon ?

If you push the clutch in when it starts to miss will the engine stall?

    1st things 1st.
Reset the ECU by disconnecting the battery for a good 30 min.
